Playing Tourist? Visiting The Convent Of Royal Barefoot Sister
by Peter Wilson, Pet
Are you planning a You probably have a long list of ?must see's? but there is one attraction that is a bit off the tourist trail and sure to delight you especially if you're an art buff. The Monaterio de las Descalzas Reales houses an amazing collection of art and is a functioning convent.

Also known as The Convent of Royal Barefoot Sisters and although the name sounds whimsical, the convent has been around for centuries and is a sacred place. It got its start in 1559 by the daughter of Charles V as a sanctuary for noblewomen and has maintained its religious and purposeful commitment up to today. For more than 200 years the convent was closed to outsiders and just in the last 50 years or so have visitors been permitted. The buildings themselves are great examples of Renaissance architecture. The stone fa?ade is a vibrant orange and the several archways and intricate doors are wonderful examples of this period's architecture.

The collection was acquired from dowries given to the convent by noblewomen entering the convent to lead a life of piety. For centuries these were on display only to members of the convent but today we can all enjoy the artistic treasures. There are paintings from well-known artists such as Titan, Brueghel, and Zurbaran. There are also intricately hand woven tapestries based on drawings by Rubens. Sculptures also abound including a sepulcher of Emperatriz Maria by Crescenci, a marble mausoleum by Leoni and several works by Mena.

The only way to see these works of art at the convent is by a guided tour from one of the nuns. The tours are only in Spanish but the nuns will happily answer questions in English. The works of art really speak for themselves so don't worry about understanding the tour. Check out the convents website or call the convent for tour times and information.

The Convent of the Royal Barefoot Sisters is a real privilege to see since it's been only open to the public for a short time. Make sure you make time for this sight since it is sure to impress you even if you're not an art buff.
