Poker Strategy For Texas Holdem
by Gene Marshall, Gen
Most players serious about poker recognize that winning a game requires strategy. After all, the world's top poker professionals haven't got where they are today on luck alone. Poker strategy is not only crucial to a player's success ? it is also virtually impossible to win any game without some grasp of the basic concepts.

While some forms of strategy can be applied to the general poker game, other types are required for specific variations of poker. The strategies that we will look at here are for those players interested in improving their game of Texas Holdem poker.

Texas Holdem poker is the most popular version of online poker. It can be found at nearly every online casino where internet poker is played. Most people have no difficulty in learning the poker rules, however the concept of strategy can be elusive. Texas Holdem requires strategic play at both pre-flop and post-flop stages of the game. Before the flop, the main strategy required is knowledge of when to raise the bet. This depends entirely on the cards you hold in your hand. If you have a pair of face cards, you should raise. If you have a hand of two mismatched face cards, you should also raise.

Your other options at the pre-flop are to fold (retire from the game) or call (equal the betting limit at this stage of the game.) Generally you should fold if you have mismatched low valued cards less than seven. You should raise if you have pairs of tens, nines, eights and sevens. However, if you're poker gambling you should ensure that you already have a bet in front of you before you call on these cards.

Post-flop play is when most of the strategy used in Texas Holdem is required. Regardless of whether you're playing poker online or live poker, you need to know when to fold after the flop and when to play on. You should only remain in the game after the flop if you have a worthwhile pair in your poker hand. You should also stay in if one of the cards in your hand is the same as a high-valued community card. For example, if you have a Jack and a nine in your hand and there is a Jack, three and five on the board, you should remain in the game for the next round. If you don't have a pair, fold and play poker in the next hand.

In latter stages of the game such as the Turn and the River, you should raise on bets when you have a top pair. This is your chance to manipulate the size of the pot and to encourage other players to retire from the game. You should only remain in the poker online game after the Turn or Fourth Street if you're well on your way to making a strong poker hand such as a flush or straight. Remember that every round you remain in, the more money you will lose if your poker hand is inadequate.

Knowing when to fold and when to call or raise can save you cash in the long run and will help you get more out of your Texas Holdem game. Practise the advice above using download poker software and visit online poker forums for extra poker tips. Remember, you can never have too much strategic knowledge in a poker game!
