Survivor Winner Faces Legal Battle
by Groshan Fabiola, Gro
Here we go again, another reality star gets caught in trouble. It seems like it's becoming a fad these days, isn't it? Remember back in the old Survivor days, Richard Hatch won a million dollars but was idiotic enough not to pay the taxes so he was sent to jail. There's also Johnny Fairplay, although not a Survivor winner, has gotten into some trouble with the law as well. Next up is Yul Kwon, who emerged victorious in Survivor: Cook Islands . He was once voted by Entertainment Weekly magazine as the Favorite Survivor Winner, as he was one of the most strategic and honest players in the history of the game. However, the people of San Francisco tend to think otherwise. He is no favorite Survivor for the people of San Francisco .

So here's the thing. Kwon would like to invest in something fun. So he teamed up with some friends in the North Beach section of San Francisco and decided to open up a small yogurt store. However, there's a problem. The North Beach residents have a retail ordinance in the said area, forbidding any chain stores from entering their neighborhood. Basically, that's the law and the law applies to everyone, even a Survivor millionaire.

"It doesn't matter if he's the Shah of Iran or the winner of Survivor," North Beach Supervisor Aaron Peskin said. "The law's the law's the law."

The basic issue here is not Kwon's entrepreneurship but what constitutes a chain store. Kwon would like to open a branch of the frozen yogurt store, Red Mango, and when he first applied for the franchise of the store, there were only a total of four Red Mango shops nationwide. Today, there are more than 20 different shops all over America , according to their website. North Beach says that any store that owns over 11 locations is considered a chain.

"We're trying to preserve a really special neighborhood," North Beach small business owner Tony Azzollini said. "There's already a yogurt place coming in, and it's run by a family business."

Looks like Kwon and his friends will have a huge problem up to deal with, if they really want to pursue their entrepreneurship. But then again, there are other locations and other businesses to consider, and surely they won't run out of business ideas to implement.
