Hiking To Your Travel Destination? Keep These Tips In Mind
by Leroy Calstard, Ler
Are you considering taking an outdoor vacation? If so, it will probably include some amount of hiking. Not only is hiking great exercise but it also gives you the opportunity to commune with nature and take in some amazing scenery. While hiking isn't typically dangerous, it is wise to heed some safety tips.

Many people prefer to hike solo or some think they have no choice since they're traveling alone on holiday. Only well beaten paths should be explored by yourself. If there are several hikers on the path and there are no unprotected ridges and cliffs then hiking by yourself is an option. Otherwise make sure you bring a partner. Not only will they be good company but they can assist with first aid and, in the unlikely event of serious injury, can get help.

Though it may not be as adventurous and interesting, stay on the path unless you're an experience hiker. Wondering off the path only a few hundred (or less) yards can create disorientation and you can easily get lost. In addition, bring a compass and map and know how to use them before you set out. Know your travel destination beforehand and ask rangers or other hikers if you're unsure of the trail.

While you shouldn't go overboard on packing, make sure you bring some safety essentials. These include matches, a flashlight, sun block, a knife, water and snacks. A first aid kit with the basics of bandages and anti-bacterial ointment is essential. A light jacket can be a lifesaver if you get lost in the forest after dark.

Take plenty of water or sports drinks with you since dehydration leads to exhaustion and disorientation. It will weigh about 8 pounds per gallon so take what you think you'll need and an extra bottle just in case you run out or your hike takes longer than expected. Drink from natural rain sources only in an emergency since many have bacteria that can cause diarrhea which leads to greater dehydration.

Bring enough food for your hike and if you're anticipating a short hike then still bring some snacks. In the event you get lost you'll have something to eat to give you energy.

Above everything, use common sense and know your limitations. Even though you might think you can climb a steep grade or hike for hours, unless you're an experienced climber, stick to hikes that are at or below your level until you're ready for a more difficult challenge.

Hiking on your outdoor vacation is sure to be an adventure and rewarding. Follow these tips to ensure a safe and worry-free hike.
