[V47]Varicose Veins And Spider Veins
by Dr.peter Mann, Dr.
Varicose veins are large, raised, swollen blood vessels that twist and turn. They usually develop in the legs and can be seen through the skin. Spider veins are smaller, red, purple, and blue vessels that are also twisted and turning. Spider veins are easily visible through the skin as well. Like varicose veins, they are most often seen on the legs or face.

Both are common more so in women than in men, and can increase in frequency with age. Approximately 30-60% of adults have either varicose or spider veins. Some common factors for those who are more prone to getting varicose veins and spider veins are heredity, obesity, hormone influxes during pregnancy, puberty, or menopause, the use of birth control pills, a history of blood clots, and occupations which require a lot of standing. Unfortunately, while these vein problems may look unsightly, they also can cause discomfort, pain, swelling, spasms, and numbness,or be the effects of an even larger underlying problem.

Approximately 25 million people in the United States suffer from venous reflux disease. Venous reflux or venous insufficiency develops when the valves that usually keep blood flowing out of your legs become damaged or diseased. Traditionally, patients diagnosed with venous reflux would undergo varicose vein stripping surgery. This is done by surgically removing (stripping) the troublesome varicose vein from your leg and re-routing blood flow through healthy veins. In San Diego Vnus Closure provides a less-invasive alternative to vein stripping by closing the diseased vein instead of removing it.

The Vnus Closure procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis using either local or general anesthesia in which the physician numbs the leg before treatment. Currently, it is predominantly performed in a hospital setting, though it may also be performed in a San Diego vein treatment center or physician's office. Also known as Radiofrequency occlusion, during this procedure, a small catheter is inserted into the vein to deliver radiofrequency energy to the vein wall, causing it to heat, collapse, and seal shut.

Other types of San Diego vein treatments provided include Scelerotherapy, Endovenous laser treatment, and other lasers and intense pulsed light. While for some San Diego spider veins and varicose veins sufferers, treatment is medically necessary, others may not even experience any pain or discomfort caused by the veins, and simply want them removed for cosmetic reasons.

Many insurance companies do cover the cost of treating varicose veins, but generally not spider veins. Check with your insurance company and your local physician to determine which treatment option you may be covered under and would be right for you.

For some, questions such as, do spider veins cause soreness to touch like a bruise are common and yes, spider veins can cause soreness but in most cases, patients will notice that spider veins are not generally very painful and that they are usually mildly uncomfortable. This can change however, over time and the longer spider veins are permitted, they can worsen. Varicose veins generally cause greater pain and discomfort and patients will notice that they are also more unsightly due to their bulging from beneath the skin. This can be painful, cause itching and swelling. Patients often note that spider veins on the legs are generally more uncomfortable than anywhere since they do receive more pressure due to their location and the effects of gravity. The heavier the patient is, the likelier they are to have aggravated veins in the lower extremities of the body due to having to repeatedly return blood to the heart despite the added weight pressure.

To relieve symptoms and related to vein discomfort, and to stop asking do spider veins cause soreness to touch like a bruise, some patients can use temporary relief such as elevation, ice, and pressure, yet these are all temporary and patients must seek out treatment that actually removes the spider veins. Sclerotherapy and laser treatments are the two most obvious choices, as they are the most popular and widely used treatments to date for spider veins. There are ways to minimize discomfort but to fully alleviate the underlying issue treatment must be performed so that do spider veins cause soreness to touch like a bruise can be a question of the past. Furthermore, patients must make a concerted effort to alter lifestyle habits, eat well, and lose any excess weight. This is all part of a healthier lifestyle and a new and improved fitness routine. The healthier the weight bracket one is in, the easier the cardiovascular system can work. This is common sense yet most do not recognize the connection between weight gain and spider veins appearing. Veins begin to show signs of dysfunction when they are placed under extreme stress.

There are other reasons that vein dysfunction may occur and some find that hormonal changes, pregnancy (weight gain and hormones) can lead to veins. For women, spider veins and vein dysfunction in general is a health concern especially if a sedentary lifestyle is combined with an unhealthy weight. Many will find that losing weight, eating healthy and getting active is the key to greater overall health and these changes affect the body for the better over time. Each patient's body is unique and what treatments must be sought out is unique to each individual situation.
