[V128]Visitor Medical Insurance Usa
by C. Ray Sondeo, C.
In many countries, most notably US and Canada, the expenditure on some form of medical care is astronomically high. This cost would burn a hole in your pockets if you were not covered by some visitor insurance plans. Whether you are a visitor on a business trip or on a pleasure trip, getting yourself a visitor medical insurance will allow you to travel peacefully. Such medical insurance is also referred to as overseas medical insurance and is extended to cover medical expenses, accidents, loss of belongings, delay of departure, loss of passport etc

Different companies offer different visitor medical insurance policies that show a discrepancy in terms of insurance premiums, liability, deductibles, insurance premiums, limits of coverage, maximum medical coverage and manner and mode of payment. There are many benefits of purchasing visitor health insurance plans.

The most important one is that these insurance plans are a collective way of solving our problems like personal losses or heavy expenses. The insurance company collects premiums from all its customers and clubs them together. In this way a pool of money is formed for paying to beneficiary. Thus the beneficiary does not have to bear all the expenses. The visitor's insurance plan covers many other aspects like loss of personal belongings, passport, emergency extended stay, cancellation losses, or even legal hassles.

Travelers can substantially lessen the financial risks arising out of accidents or medical emergencies by purchasing visitor health insurance. One can obtain quick visitors medical insurance quotes, easily appreciate and comprehend important insurance terms and find answers to most common insurance related queries. Most insurance companies also offer excellent customer service by providing the customers easy access to dynamic web engines.

It becomes easier for customer to book policies online once they get their relevant travel documents. You can also buy policies for your family members or friends in their absence. Most of the times, these policies offer and cover a variety of features and thus, a customer can choose a policy that best suits him or her.

Comprehending visitors insurance correctly can be a challenging task. It is very important to understand the plan that you are going to buy. It is also important to take a note of the reputation of the company from where you are going to buy the policy. These insurance companies will offer you a number of options based solely on the time, frequency and manner of visit. For instance, business travelers may opt for annual travel insurance policies.

Nowadays, the destination of visit is another important aspect that is considered before applying for a policy. Some nations are classified as 'high risk countries' owing to the constant political turmoil and terrorist activity in the country. A visit to such a country may be covered by a visitors insurance policy that is extended to cover war like conditions and terrorist activities.

You must understand how each plan works and the pros and cons of each. Some important differences in the plan are stated below:

1. Comprehensive plans and Fixed benefit plans: This is a big difference between plans. Comprehensive plans are more expensive than the fixed benefit plans. Comprehensive plans provide coverage up to the policy maximum. For expenses up to the plan limit out of pocket expenses are capped to the deductible and the co insurance. Fixed benefit plans have certain pre set maximum that will be paid for each eligible expense. A policy that offers a total $50,000 benefit may have a limit of $2000 for surgery, $500 for x rays, lab work etc.

2. Coverage for pre existing conditions: Pre existing conditions are usually not covered by visitor medical insurance plans. Pre existing conditions are defined differently by each insurance company. For the plan you are looking to purchase make sure you understand how they are defined. In some cases the definition includes only those medical conditions that the insured was aware of prior to the start of the plan and was receiving treatment or medication. Some other plans may have a broader classification to include all conditions that manifested prior to the start of the plan even if the insured was not aware of their existence.

3. Claims processing: Ideally it is better to find a plan that has a claims processing department in the host country. If the plan is similar to the local insurance plans and has a similar claims procedures the doctors and hospitals will have no trouble sending out claims directly to the insurance and respond to them effectively. If the claims offices are not local, the doctors will most likely have you pay the bills first and then you can get reimbursed by the insurance.

4. Rating of the underwriter: The strength of the Underwriter is gauged by its A.M Best rating. This measures the financial strength of the company and its ability to pay out claims. Always check the rating to make sure the Underwriter is sound.

5. Doctors/hospitals that can be used by the insured: Some plans follow a network and require the insured to utilize providers within the network to receive maximum benefits. Make sure that the plan you are considering has a wide network. Chances of direct billing are higher when you use a in-network provider. Some plans do not have a network. In this case direct billing is entirely up to the provider you use. Some plans have networks but they do not penalize you if use a provider from outside.

6. Co insurance: It is the percentage of the covered medical expense that the insured must pay. For example if the plan has an 80/20 co insurance rate, the insurance plan pays 80% of the eligible expenses and the rest is paid by the insured. Premiums can vary widely depending on the co insurance of the plan. Sometimes the co insurance applies only up to a certain pre defined cumulative medical expense amount. Beyond that amount eligible expenses are covered 100%.

7. Additional Benefits: Some plans offer only medical insurance while some others may offer a bundle of benefits. Sometimes it may be worth paying extra for those additional benefits like accidental death, evacuation, lost luggage etc. While comparing plans make sure you check all the benefits included.

Do not choose a plan based on the premium alone. Make sure you check all the benefits offered and compare them with similar plans to find one that works for you. It is best to get the advice and suggestions from a professional specializing in visitor medical insurance plans to understand the subtle differences between the plans.
