Numbers are alarming!

According to National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey about 61% population in USA is either overweight or obese. Every year in USA around 300,000 premature deaths occur due to overweight and lack of physical activity.

Causes of obesity

Psychological causes like stress, depression, nervousness or anxiety may trigger overeating. Genetically also sometimes obesity is passed from generation to generation. The causes maybe environmental too like certain lifestyle habits one cultivates where there is minimal activity. Other factors could be due to certain disorders in the body like Cushing's disease or hypothyroidism etc.

Weight loss drugs challenging obesity

Phentermine, a class of drugs called as amphetamines and anorectic drugs are being popularly prescribed by doctors to initiate weight loss for the clinically obese. The choice of the product is only permitted only after examining a patient. The products are not meant for those who have heart complications or high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid, glaucoma etc.

Adipex-P or phentermine hydrochloride is also another short term- drug which effectively reduces appetite like the other one.

These obesity drugs are taken in conjunction with diet control and exercise regimes. There is a structured program inbuilt by physicians who monitor the progress and effect of the drugs on the patient on a day to day basis. The weight loss drugs are immediately discontinued if side effects persist or the drug fails to reduce weight.

What about the non prescription appetite suppressant drugs?

There are plenty of non-prescription weight loss drugs available in the market as herbal supplements or at least they claim to have natural ingredients which are less harmful to the body. However one should consult a doctor before risking one's health to unknown symptoms or side effects of the drugs on the body.

While losing weight….

When we lose weight we also lose fat, muscle tissues and water. Hence it is always advised to have plenty of water to avoid dehydration of the body. From the health point of view and to maintain a good metabolic rate it is better to preserve as much lean body mass as possible. Experts are of the opinion that during the early weeks of weight loss 75% of the weight loss is fat loss and the rest 25% come from the lean mass. That is why if certain exercises are incorporated one can lose upto 90% fat and reduce the lean loss to 10%.

Conclusion

The quantity of lean body mass determines the rate of calorie burns or metabolism. However, body fat also helps in storing potential energy for the body protecting us from external injuries and cold temperature. But that's no reason to retain all that excess fat. What one should ideally consider is one's body mass indexwhich will decide on how much weight we need to lose. Let's fight obesity and strengthen our life span!

Vitamins help with weight loss

It has been found that certain vitamins that helps with weight loss, and is called 'stress' vitamins. Vitamins b3 and b6 are especially vital as they help to supply fuel to cells, which are then able to burn energy. The vitamin b6 along with zinc is essential for the production of pancreatic enzymes, which is the key factor in digesting of the food, which in turn makes the usage of food efficient, instead of storing it as fat.

Vitamins that help weight loss affect the metabolism, by thyroid hormone production, and the vitamins b2, b3 and b6 are necessary for this hormone. B3 is also a component of the glucose tolerance factor, which is released every time the blood sugar rises and the vitamin b5 helps to control fat metabolism and is involved in energy release processes. Since the b vitamins promote weight loss by influencing the storage of food and metabolism of the body, they are very important and no diet should be carried forward without including a good b complex.

Components of vitamin that promotes weight loss

Another component of the vitamin that promotes weight loss is chromium, which is essential for the metabolism of sugar and without it insulin is less effective in controlling blood sugar levels. Chromium has been a well-researched nutrient in connection to weight. It also helps to control levels of fat and cholesterol in the blood. Zinc is another nutrient that works with vitamins a and e to manufacture the thyroid hormones, and has a direct effect on appetite control. Deficiency of zinc affects the production of the vitamin that causes weight loss, as there is a general loss of taste and smell, creating a need for stronger tasting foods (which tend to be sweeter, saltier and more fattening!). Co-enzyme q10 is another vital vitamin that promotes weight loss that is needed for energy production, found in all the tissues and organs in the body. Studies showed that people on a low-fat or a no-fat diet doubled their weight loss when taking co q10 compared to those using diet alone.

Blood sugar levels and metabolism to be even

It's better to eat little and often, so that the blood sugar levels and metabolism is even. Skipping meals or eating skimpily can slow down the metabolism because your body thinks there is a shortage of food, so it is very necessary to include the supplements and vitamins that aid weight loss by keeping the body functions intact. Multivitamins that help to lose weight and correct mineral intake should be the corner stone of the supplement program to make sure that you are getting a 'little bit of everything', coupled with regular exercise will keep those kilos from coming back!
