[W226]Web Templates With Flash
by James Lim, Jam
1) Do not use splash pages

Splash pages are the first pages you see when you arrive at a website. They normally have a very beautiful image with words like "welcome" or "click here to enter". In fact, they are just that -- pretty vases with no real purpose. Do not let your visitors have a reason to click on the "back" button! Give them the value of your site up front without the splash page.

2) Do not use excessive banner advertisements

Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so you will be wasting valuable website real estate. Instead, provide more valueable content and weave relevant affiliate links into your content, and let your visitors feel that they want to buy instead of being pushed to buy.

3) Have a simple and clear navigation

You have to provide a simple and very straightforward navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use it. Stay away from complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors don't know how to navigate, they will leave your site.

4) Have a clear indication of where the user is

When visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. That way, they will be able to browse relevant information or navigate to any section of the site easily. Don't confuse your visitors because confusion means "abandon ship"!

5) Avoid using audio on your site

If your visitor is going to stay a long time at your site, reading your content, you will want to make sure they're not annoyed by some audio looping on and on on your website. If you insist on adding audio, make sure they have some control over it -- volume or muting controls would work fine.

Maybe forums are not so trustworthy source of information as official letters but still they can be helpful in many cases. The main purpose of each forum is communication - people want to exchange the opinions and they do it. In forums people like to discuss something, discover problems and point mistakes out, make complaints and ask advice. They pay attention to such important for them things which can be ignored by professionals. As a result different mistakes and misunderstandings between sellers and customers occur. That's why I like forums and from time to time I make sure of those obvious profits I get communicating there.
Recently I've visited a forum dedicated to web design and web templates where we discussed the usefulness of internet site, what is the best way to create it, how to choose the template. Of course opinions were different. Everyone tried to convince others, but I think it was without any results – every participant of discussion preferred not to change his mind. However, I divagate from the main point of my story.

So, from this discussion I picked out many useful information and noticed one thing. It's well-known that every day companies engaged in producing and selling web site templates lay out some set of new templates which as a rule have relation to different themes. That's the heart of the problem! A person who wants to buy a template for his architectural company for instance , will visit lots of sites looking for something new and special. But in each store he gets only one (if any) new template on his theme and few old ones. It's not enough to make the right choice. He travels from site to site and after all he becomes puzzled and forgets where he saw one or another template that seemed to suit him. After such unsuccessful looking-for some people prefer to make order in design studio or make it themselves, others decide to wait for another layouts. You see, it's very hard process for those who are picky and want their sites to look ideally and not like others. How to simplify this process? It'll be great if customers can find at least ten new templates on one theme to choose in one place. I don't mean that all such companies haven't them - during years in this business they built up big templates base. I'm telling that some of them have become out of date and can't suit the young modern company. Time goes by and all changes. It's the main rule of our life. That's why new templates on similar themes are vitally important. However, who will agree to produce templates for only some parts of the firms and organizations in the same time ignoring others? It's not the way out.

Having thought about how to settle this situation and find a compromise where everybody will be satisfied we came to such conclusion: People need thematic collections and it's our job to meet their requirements. Another questions were how often to produce such collections and what criteria to follow while choosing their themes. We quickly found the answer on the first question – once a month. But the second one was much harder. How to explain to customers why we chose that theme but not another, what were the reasons of such decision? However, contrary to all our expectations the way out has found itself. Little prehistory. Our company always take care about its employees who are mostly followers of regular way of life. Different anti-smoking and anti-alcohol campaigns were taking place in our office. Of course, I understand that such things depend only of the choice of each person, but who wants to suffer from somebody's foolishness. Fortunately in our team everything is all right with this problem. We often play basketball together or go on a hike. Every of us has its own favourite kind of sport, some hobbies etc. That's why remembering about forthcoming World No Tobacco Day we've decided to dedicate our first collection to such theme – «Active rest». I hope we'll find like-minded persons who take care about their health and like sport. We want to help them to create sites of their favourite sport clubs or teams, web sites with high-quality designs and simple navigation to attract more people in sport and find new friends.
Turning back to the thematic collections I should mention what advantages the potential clients can get from appearance of some set of different templates on one theme in one place.
-First and the main – Customers get a wider choice – but not a choice between old samples – the choice among new designs, created by the professionals who took into account all modern tendencies and technical novelties.
-Secondly – It saves your time and spares your efforts and nerves. You shouldn't travel from site to site through different links any more. You can make a purchase in one place.
-Thirdly – The theme of the next collection will be announced few days earlier, so you'll know what to expect in the future and have time to decide whether you need those templates or not.
-Last but not the least – Potential customers will have a great opportunity to vote for the themes of future collections. On the one hand you can order a collection to your own taste. On the other hand our designers will create templates more pleasantly and quickly having known that you need them.
That's all what I wanted to say. Now you see how useful is sometimes to chat in the forums. In the end I want to address everyone who has some questions, complaints, unclear moments, offers and recommendations – Don't hesitate to appeal directly to us with all your problems. It's much better than just to wait when we guess on our own.
Just keep in touch and enjoy our new collection!
