[U167]Used Retail Store Fixtures
by Tim Pelcone, Tim

In the retail world we have all heard the old adage, "location, location, location." By now this concept is obvious, but what else makes something sell? There are a number of factors that have helped successful business owners display their product. This article will discuss some of the basics of using custom displays and fixtures to effectively showcase a product in a store, or even within your home.

Those in the retail business understand that dressing up a product is often the difference in a slow day and selling out. Customers should be impressed with the product from the moment they set eyes on it. This same concept can be applied to unique collectibles at home too. The key is showing off the product with an appropriate display. It can be difficult finding the perfect fit for whatever you are trying to show off. In order to get the most attractive setup for their product some retailers often use custom made display stands.

No matter your needs, display cases should meet the standards of size, materials, general aesthetics, and overall harmony of the pre-existing room and its décor. Typical manufactured display stands are produced in large quantities that are designed to fit a general theme, but rarely are a perfect match. In the retail world and in our homes this is just not good enough. Decorating styles within a home are well thought out and most times consistent throughout in order to reinforce a theme or common tie among the décor.

The best store designs that make people feel comfortable, reinforce the store branding, and show products well are done with custom display fixtures using matching colors and materials. The lighting on products can also be critical. Custom display fixtures allow specific supplemental lighting or many times spot lighting to show off merchandise in with dramatic flair. Additionally, custom display cases and custom retail stands can be designed for exact space requirements so the maximum amount of merchandise can be displayed per square foot.

Custom displays are made according to the exacting needs of the store owner. One can indicate the exact dimensions, material, finish, and color they would like. A good custom retail display company will work with its customer in designing the best fit for their desired location and product to display. Many of these displays will be manufactured from scratch and provide exactly the unique look you are in search of. If you are artistically inclined it is even possible to provide a sketch to the display maker and they will be able to produce what you have envisioned for the store or for showcasing at home.

There are lots of needs for displaying goods. Historical pieces throughout your home, product display at a show, or retail exhibits all require a unique design to properly and effectively showoff the product's features and be aesthetically pleasing to an onlooker. Custom designed displays are often the best way to showcase a product or a special collection.

Creating your identity can be a real challenge. Your brand image is what people feel and think when your store comes to mind. You’ll need to conform your services and products to the image that you choose, so choose wisely. Consider what types of items you want to sell. Consider your demographic. Consider your location. Research your competitors. Figure out what they’ve done that helped them become who they are. The most important part of branding your retail store is to be original; completely and utterly original. Your originality is going to be what people identify with your name.

Merchandise, store displays, counter displays, color, lighting, space, window displays, the hangers and racks you choose, all will go into branding your image. Be consistent with your theme. Create promotions that revolve around the brand that you want to project. Use your brand and advertise the idea in everything that goes into and out of your store. All advertising should clearly show the image that you want to project.

Your company logo also needs to be unique and trademarked. Your logo should appear in as many places as possible throughout the store. Print it on receipts, tags, walls, doors, outdoor advertising, print ads, on your website, and on every flyer and bag that leaves your store. Keep the image that you want to portray in mind when designing your logo. You may start with a drawing and craft the logo yourself. You can also hire and agency to design your logo for you. They will make sure that your logo will look good in small print, black and white or color, large print and even on billboards. Your logo should be in all the correct formats for printing, broadcasting and to use on your web site.

Use your logo and promote your brand by researching when and where to advertise. If you’re branding a high-end store, you probably shouldn’t advertise in a poor area of town or in a cheap sales paper. Stick to the areas that contain customers in the demographic you are targeting and flood that area. People can have an idea, impression and preconception about your store before they ever set foot in it. Don’t disappoint. Let your prospective customers know why you are unique. Be enticing in your advertisements. Use product placement to get your name out there. Having a celebrity or person of interest endorse your brand can be priceless.

Your brand is like your personality out there for the world to see and recognize. It will affect people in ways that you want if you convey it carefully. Brand image has been proven to influence purchasers to spend more money. If your image fits the image that they want to project then you’re in good shape. People associate the brands that they buy with their own identities. They project what they want others to think of them by the brands that they choose. Getting your brand into their hands can help it spread and have a powerful effect on your business.
