[V62]Vera Wang Fashion Show
by Suzanne Vandegrift, Suz

Vera Wang is a gifted designer who was born in 1949 and raised in an affluent family in New York. She attended The Chapin School and has a art history degree from Sarah Lawrence College. She also attend the Sorbonne in Paris, France, where her mother frequently took her to fashion shows. This may be where she first became interested in designing.

At the age of 19, after having trained as a figure skater, she competed in the 1968 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She was once featured in the a Sports Illustrated issue "Faces in the Crowd". Vera was hopeful for the US Olympic skating team and, when that didn't materialize, skating's loss became the fashion industry's gain.

Vera Wang's beginning in the fashion industry was spent as senior editor for Vogue Magazine for 16 years. She left Vogue in 1985 and moved to Ralph Lauren as a design director. She stayed with Ralph Lauren for 2 years, until 1990, when she opened a luxury salon in the Carlyle Hotel in New York where she featured her, now incredibly beautiful, trademark bridal gowns.

One of Vera Wang's first loves, figure skating, became a creative force in her fashion world. She designed the lovely white skating dress, with illusion sleeves Nancy Kerrigan wore in 1994. She continues to design the beautiful skating outfits worn by Olympic hopefuls and stars, such as Michelle Kwan. Figure skating isn't the only sport she has designed outfits for; the Philadelphia Eagle cheerleaders come out to support their team dressed in Vera Wang originals.

Vera Wang's creations have been worn by some very famous people. Jennifer Lopez was a picture of beauty in her Vera Wang original, off-the-shoulder, ruffled, lace gown as she wed Marc Anthony in June of 2004. A star who wed in color was actress Sharon Stone who wore a Vera Wang pale-pink chiffon gown. She's also designed wedding gowns for such well known figures as Jennifer Garner who wed Ben Affleck, Mariah Carey, Thalia, Victoria Beckham, Uma Thurman and Holly Hunter. Two very popular celebrities, Sarah Michelle Geller (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Freddie Prinze Jr, wed in 2002. She wore a white Vera Wang strapless with a chapel train.

But Vera Wang originals are not only for the rich and famous. You can now choose from some of the most fabulous designer gowns that will make your wedding day truly a day that will live in your memory forever. You might select a magnificent silk satin ball gown with gathered, off-the-shoulder bodice and lace skirt with a sweep train or a gorgeous ivory silk mikado gown with embroidered flower appliques on a ribbed bodice and an A-line skirt with a layered chapel train. Whatever your personal style, there is a top designer wedding gown waiting for you, don't settle for less then the best.
