Water damage includes a large number of possible losses caused by water to a material or system such as rotting of wood, rusting of steel, delaminating of materials like ply-wood. Water damage inside houses includes burst pipes, leaky appliances, flooded basements etc. Water damage is classified into three categories. Category one includes source of water that does not pose substantial threat to humans and classified as "Clean Water". Category two includes source of water that contains a significant degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminants and causes discomfort. Category three is called as "Black Water" and is grossly unsanitary. This water contains unsanitary agents like harmful bacteria and fungi. Different water damage cleanup methods are used for different categories of water.
The water damage cleanup methods involve the cleaning up of surface that comes in contact with the water. Category-1 water damage occurs as the result of accumulation of rainwater, or by pipe bursting in your home. The water in this category usually does not contain contaminants that would be harmful to living things. This type of damage can be cleaned by locating the area where the source of the leak is and by stopping that leak. After stopping the leak, water extraction should be immediately carried out to extract all the water out and the source should be allowed to dry. Carpets that have been under water for more than three days should be removed and replaced immediately. The concrete slab underneath the carpet has to be treated and dried to ensure that no moisture is left. The concrete should be dried for five days.
Second category of water damage includes water that has limited level of contamination. This category of water called gray water requires special method of water damage cleanup. The water in this category is hazardous for human consumption. Gray water comes from flooding due to the break down of household appliances, such as dishwasher, washing machine, or refrigerator. It could also come from the overflow of a toilet that has no human excrement in it, or a chemically treated source of water such as an aquarium. gray water overflow should be treated immediately. Gray water damage cleanup should be carried out by appointing a plumber or any cleaning service to extract the water. The area will then have to be completely dried out and antimicrobial treatment should be applied to the wet area.
The third category of water damage includes black water. The water damage cleanup method used here should be highly effective since it is the most dangerous category of water damage. Black water usually occurs from various sources like floods, a sewer, or the overflow of anything that contains materials that are harmful if consumed, such as a toilet with human excrement in it. Gray water and black water are hard to differentiate, and the color or look of the water can be deceptive. Proper assessment of the water should be done and appropriate water damage cleanup method should be followed.
Any category of water damage unless treated immediately can cause the growth of microorganisms that are harmful to human beings. Even if clean water damage occurs, mold and mildew usually grow within hours and could affect people living inside the house. The water should not be left to stagnate for a long time since it may cause harmful health hazards. If the water level in the house is more than one feet deep or larger than 10 square feet, professionals should be called for the water damage cleanup. Dilly dallying or waiting for it to subside may cause harmful effects to the health. By taking action as soon as possible, the extent of the water damage can be mitigated.
