[W48]Was 911 An Inside Job
by Cynthia Rowland, Cyn
The awareness of who we are and where we want to go in life develops in your mind; you have control of every thought, action and deed. When one recognizes mind-power, life can become richer, easier and more fulfilling because you are cognizant of your energy, your thinking.

One avenue of awareness is through affirmations; these simple positive statements, steeped in belief that you are the master of your destiny, can help overcome many fears and doubts one may harbor. Tony Robbins, noted author and speaker, has a favorite that he repeats 500 times a day while jogging: “God’s wealth is circulating in me. His wealth flows to me in avalanches of abundance. All my needs, desires and goals are met instantaneously for I am one with God and God is everything.” Those are powerful words. Repeating these powerful, faith filled words many times a day will permeate your subconscious mind and soon you will find yourself repeating them over and over again each day.

Recently, NBC Today Show featured Katie Couric, Christy Brinkley and Cheryl Tiegs discussing how age and aging was being redefined; they concluded that age fifty is now the new thirty; age sixty is now the new forty. This redefinition of aging is possible because we look and act differently than our ancestors; we have transformed physically and mentally and most of us would like to think we’re getting better at life. Just think back 100 years, our life expectancy was approximately 47 years and now the average age of first time grandparents is 47.

Transformation of the self - awareness, actualization, comes from the inside. Many people believe if they are showing outward signs of aging, Botox or a visit to a plastic surgeon will give them the needed boost of self-confidence, sex appeal or happiness that is lacking in their lives. Once those procedures are done, some patients may be disappointed that their life did not magically transform: yes, the outside has been changed yet they may still feel empty and unfilled.

As life expectancy increases more and more anti-aging creams, pills and injections will be marketed to the baby boomers and zoomers. As it is today, we are inundated with lotions and potions that promote empty promises which mean there are a lot of disappointed people who have spent countless thousands of dollars chasing after the fountain of youth. Celebrities and models have set an unreachable goal for many as their airbrushed and retouched photos are splashed across beauty magazines, movie posters and billboards. They just look so perfect – no wrinkles, no bulging thighs or stomach that jiggles and gorgeous hair perfectly coifed.

Almost every emotion shows on our face – pain, joy, anger, stress, disappointment, frustration, sorrow, illness, hopelessness and love. When life happens the face becomes drawn and tired. At this point, some may seek professional help – plastic surgery. After a few nips and tucks, the newly altered face begins to loosen and aging becomes apparent again because surgical procedures or injections do not stop or reverse aging in the face.

What if you want to look and feel healthier and happier without going to extremes or spending a lot of money? Well, you can!

The true beauty of every person begins inside; it’s an ongoing process of evolving emotions, understanding unconditional love and loving your self more. Happiness and health is achieved when we learn to treat each other with love, respect and honor; everyone benefits from our presence - our families, our friendships, our co-workers and each person we meet and greet.

A reliable alternative to facial injections and elective surgeries is facial exercise.

There is an internal change that occurs when you face yourself in the mirror and perform movements to correct an aging face; that change is self acceptance. As you learn to love your ‘total’ self, you will more and more appreciate that person in the mirror.

"Stealing business"...makes you think of sneaking around competitors' hotels, covertly chatting up their customers at coffee breaks, or even making phone calls under an assumed identity. It's great material for telling tall tales but, unfortunately, it can't usually be shared with the outside world.
It's typically much less the stuff of Mission Impossible, but rather practicing "Hotel Sales" basics - like accurately recording and regular follow-up to Lost Business reports. Or understanding the workings of basic inter-departmental accounting. And finally, some REAL sales ability -convincing other departments that the Sales Dept. really does have a profit motive for the ENTIRE HOTEL!
Go back to 1981, when Marriott Corp. had ONE franchisee in Cincinnati, OH (now there must be 10-15 between all the Courtyards, Residence Inns, etc.) - the Sharonville Marriott Inn. We typically went head to head with a huge Holiday Inn "Holidome" at the same Interstate exit but, back in those days, we were all very friendlyif not downright fraternalwith our hotel neighbors. In fact, the salesman that I "stole" the Cincinnati Insurance Account from would one day get his company to purchase a company-wide training program that I was later selling. But I was not about to have to "owe him one"so I returned the favor by getting him introduced to my employers, and he went on to be VP of Sales for what was then a small hotel training company...eventually becoming the largest in North America.
But back to how the "steal" came about. My Director of Sales NEVER reviewed a Sales call without asking the outcome. If for WHATEVER reason we didn't get it (or, as he cleverly taught uswe didn't WANT it), he then asked about the Lost Business Report. Either the business was not wanted (i.e. - poor arrival/departure pattern, too much meeting space given-up versus sleeping room block, etc.) and then it was called over as a "gift" to our closest and/or most nave competitor. Looking back, it was more fun comparing stories of how we "sold" the business we did NOT want to our less sophisticated competitors...as it was to gloat over our bookings!
When we did NOT get the business that we WOULD have liked to have, it was filed as "Lost Business". A better name would've been "Lost Business Temporarily"...as we will now discuss. This is the first of the "basics" that you should pay attention to. In going through these reports I could usually find something that had begun to "smell" better than when it had first been filed. Examples - you had turned-down a piece of business over "too much meeting space"but you know you have a 4-day convention center block coming up later in the year that takes no space in your hotel. Now 20 rooms that ties-up meeting space for 100 - but has a good rate and had nice Food functions - makes sense! Or, you find one that you wouldn't book when you're at 75% year-round occupancy because of the ratebut the economy slows way down (like what should be considering NOW) and now it looks pretty good!
I come across Cincinnati Insurance, and it's in the "low rate" category. I investigate a bit more and see they "have to have" room rates less than $35 (remember - this is 1981, but that is still "cheap" - even then!), BUTcome to find out there's both a REASON and a "concession point" - a favorable consideration you can get from almost any client...if you just get to the right person and present it well. The reason for the low sleeping room rates - the attendees were all independent "agents" (not employees) and the company can't pay for their sleeping rooms. But it's their annual Recognition Weekend for their TOP performersand the company spends FIVE TIMES as much on LAVISH F&B functions all weekend long -even fully stocked Hospitality Suites - as they do on sleeping rooms.
Here's the second part of the "inside steal". I went to the F&B Director with the "bait" - "If I can get you the entire July-Aug. Catering budget dollars in ONE weekend ($200/person @ 400ppl = $80,000)...would you "rebate" an agreed-upon dollar amount to be posted to sleeping room revenue?! Do you think he was agreeable?! And, if you're worried about the Controller who is always finding a way to tell you how they "simply can't post revenue like that" - here's a tip - visit to the GM's and fill him in on how you're going to have to 'sell this' to Accounting. He just may visit the Controller with you!!
So - the moral of this story - "Do unto yourself FIRSTand you may not even NEED to do unto others".
