It's never comfortable to have head lice. They are parasitic little insects that live on the scalp and live off the blood they suck from there. Because their survival is dependent on having a human host, being without a head to live on will kill them. Female head lice commonly lay around six eggs per day, which then stay for about eight days before they hatch and take two weeks to become adults. Generally speaking, a person who has head lice may have about 12 adults moving around, but likely hundreds of eggs that are yet to hatch. Now if that doesn't make you grimace, we don't know what would.
Head lice are not picky about their hosts. As long as fresh blood is there for their sucking delight, they will be there. The most susceptible to having head lice are small girls aged 3 to 12 because they are not so mindful about their hairs and lice are pulled in to fresh blood.
Chemical Treatments' Possible Side Effects
Your kid's pediatrician might encourage the use of over-the-counter or prescription treatments like medicated cream, lotions, or shampoos for treating head lice. But know that some of these products contain toxic compounds (like lindane, pyrethrum, permethrin) that may result in more harm than good if not use properly. As an endocrine disrupter, lindane, for instance, is suspected of causing reproductive tract dysfunctions, sperm count imbalance, learning and behavioral problems, and even cancer. Permethrin and pyrethrum are proven to have neurotoxic effects and may be associated in altering the functions of the neurological system of children. Thus, chemical treatments are not always the best; and some of them might even become immune to medications eventually.
The Natural Route Against Head Lice
Head lice can be driven out using natural and conventional methods. One example is louse busting, which can take some time. Despite that, natural methods are still the best and safest way compared to chemical shampoos and lotions. Recommended anti-louse essential oils include those that come from olive, almond, and sunflower, which reportedly can stop lice dead in the their tracks. One other way to take them out is to comb your hair using especially designed narrow combs like the Nitmix Ultra Fine toothed comb.
Reminders About Head Lice
How can we handle head lice? While great nuisances, these little parasites are very much controllable. If you value your health, better stick to the natural methods. Natural louse killing means take a while but they won't harm your hair and your overall health.
