Insuring Your Diamonds
by Dror Klar, Dro
Insuring your jewelry is just as important, especially if those pieces you own consist of some pretty nice diamonds. All natural diamonds are different and are as individual as every human being.
There may be more to having them insured than you realize.

First of all, there are different ways you can have them insured and different policies to insure them with. Using your homeowner's insurance policy is one way to insure them.

This type of coverage is good if your diamonds are stolen from your home, but what if your diamond is lost or stolen while you are on vacation? This could create a problem with the coverage of a homeowner's policy. Homeowner's policies may only pay a set amount for your jewelry and this could leave you falling considerably short of funds to replace it.

Homeowner's insurance policies can vary greatly, so if this is the only coverage you have, you may want to get an individual policy for you jewelry.

If you decide to purchase an additional policy to insure your diamond jewelry, shop around and investigate different types of coverage. They offer cash value that can be agreed upon when you buy your policy, or you can get replacement value.

Since market values go up and down, replacement value may be preferred. Find out if the policies have deductibles and how much they are. Find out if you will be covered for damage and repairs also.

If you have loose diamonds to insure, most companies will require them to have a certificate of authenticity. If you do not have certificates, you can have them appraised professionally. Obtaining an appraisal is a good idea anyway because you will be getting individual specifics about your diamond.

Make sure your appraiser is certified and experienced. They should be a member of The American Society of Appraisers or The International Society of Appraisers. Appraisals from someone with these qualifications should satisfy your insurance company.

As with any other insurance policy, be sure and read it carefully and make sure of all the circumstances you will be covered for before you sign it. You do not want to miss anything in small print that could be important if and when you have to collect on it.
