Most people do not know how much fun they can have by playing soccer. Soccer is a field game that is not talked about as much as games like football and basketball are but it requires just as much skill and agility as those sports do. People usually have a good understanding about those sports but they only know that the object of the game soccer is to get the ball across the field to the other person's goal.
Many people suspect that there are certain pieces of equipment needed to play soccer but they might not realize that soccer only requires a soccer ball and a team. They might not think that they could find eleven people to play a game of soccer but let the word get out around the neighborhood and some people might start knocking on the front door very shortly because they love to play soccer.
A soccer game can be played on any large field though the professional games of soccer are generally played in fields that are set up for the game throughout the year. There are many neighborhood soccer teams out there and some of them have taken the time to ready a field for playing soccer or practicing it at some time during the year. Local schools will probably be a good place for kids to play soccer because many schools have added soccer to their curriculum.
Schools hold classes to teach kids the basics of soccer. They learn that soccer is one of the few games that allows only one person to use their hands. All other contact with the ball in soccer must be done by using the feet and some people will even use their head to hit a soccer ball while out on the soccer field. Most players think that their teammates are brilliant when they use their heads to hit the ball because it is a hard shot to make.
Students will also be taught that it is the goalie who gets to use their hands during the game. The goalie is responsible for blocking various scoring attempts throughout the game and the teammates have found that they are very good at their job because the team has scored big wins over other teams due to the blocking ability of their goalie. Some players will use their hands and commit a foul in the process.
Parents are very supportive when their child shows interest in playing soccer. Soccer is a great way for children to get exercise and have fun while they are doing it. Some kids will practice for hours all by themselves to get the techniques in moving the ball with their feet perfected. After a while, moving the ball with the feet will become second nature and the child will begin to perform very well on the field during a game.
There are several events you can plan that have a patriotic theme.
Balloon pass - This game involves relaying a balloon down a line of party-goers. Use balloons that are red, white and blue and inform the players that they will be using their hands and their legs to pass the balloon down the line. Create at least 2 teams of party-goers, and line them up in straight lines. Give the first person a balloon and inform them to place it between their legs, passing the balloon to the next person in line with their legs only. That person will take the balloon and pass it to the next party-goer by putting it over their head. That third person will put the balloon between their legs and pass to the next person like that. The activity continues until the balloon has passed all the way down the line. If you have a small group, require that the balloon get passed down the line and back again before declaring a winner.
Chalk it up - Choose a panel of judges (the oldest members of the family are the obvious picks) and have them become the official judges for a chalk contest. Break your guests into at least 2 teams (or more, depending on how many party-goers are at the party) and give them each one or two containers of sidewalk chalk. Tell them to create a sidewalk picture that shows something patriotic, and inform them the flag must be included in the picture. Give them a time limit (depending on your group, this time limit might range from 10 minutes to 45 minutes) and then have the judges declare a winner after they have carefully examined all the artwork. You could have art-themed prizes for the winners.
Parade - An enjoyable Independence Day activity that just screams "Independence Day!" is a parade with decorated bikes, scooters and the like. Ask everybody who comes to the party to decorate their bike or scooter or other item in patriotic garb. You can have party-goers bring them to the party already decorated and have a contest for "best bike", etc., but also fun is to have a decorating party within the party. Have all the items on hand to decorate the bikes and scooters and skateboards. You might have streamers, banners, flags, and ribbons. The kids and grown-ups can decorate their bikes and scooters as a party activity.
Guessing Game - These events are always enjoyable for just about any occasion. Fill a large container with peppermint candy (the red and white striped kind) and decorate it with blue and red ribbon. Have party-goers guess how many candies are in the container (which of course means you count as you place the candies in the container). The winner, or the person who comes closest to the number without going over, gets the container of candy.
Fireworks - If you are having fireworks at your home, you might have a big box of assorted fireworks. Everyone has their own favorites and party-goers might have clear ideas of what they want to see and hear. You can play a game to determine who gets to pick the next firework to go off next. You might ask trivia questions (why are there 13 stars on the flag?). Or you can have a dance off. While music plays in the background, each person who really wants to pick the next firework to go off has to dance the wackiest, silliest dance they can come up with. Someone who's been designated a judge will decide who won the dance off and that person gets to pick the next fireworks item. Unless there are more fireworks than party-goers, each person only gets to pick once.
