[W976]Work For Data Entry
by Tomas Morkenson, Tom

People very widely as to whether or not they would want to work at home. Many have tried it and never went back, and others couldn't stand it or couldn't be productive and went back to the "office" way of doing things. It really depends on what kind of a person you are and whether things like data entry jobs are for you.

Some people are self motivated, able to concentrate on the task at hand (whether it be eating a burger or doing data entry jobs) despite very accessible distractions, and are disciplined enough to make a regular schedule that allows them to be very productive while not allowing themselves to be imprisoned--never able to escape their job which is always right there. Others need a change of scenery, need extra motivation slash accountability that working with coworkers brings, feel isolated, or just don't plain enjoy their house enough to be at home all the time. This is more of an old-fashioned--off to the factory--mentality.

How hard is it for you to do the normal things of life like go to the bank, doctor, etc.? If you are like most it is next to impossible because there are only so many personal days and the typical 40 hour week is inflexible and unyielding. You see there are too many amazing benefits that come with data entry jobs that allow you to work from home and flexibility is the most valuable one of them all. So first major benefit, you get to stay healthy and on top of your money.

Next benefit of this amazing flexibility is that you can take breaks when you
want to. When I say breaks I mean breaks as in vacations which are very necessary to your health as well. Think of it this way--working from outer space is almost the same as working from Europe (or data entry jobs, you choose!). Last major benefit is dress code, or lack thereof. Don't get me wrong if you would rather work in a stiff white shirt and tie than luxurious soft sweat pants than you can!

Unfortunately only the first and not the second group of data entry jobs are able to enjoy the amazing and unique benefits of working at home that are there to take advantage of. So stop your boring job in the cubicle and get on board with the rest of us internet jockeys and work as you will. Fortunately, as this world becomes more linked globally through the wonders of technology, this second group of people (those who cannot work from home) is becoming the minority. You will wonder why you ever did it any different.

First of all, data entry is not rocket science by any means. It requires very little in the way of creative thinking. With that said, you may want to shy away from creative types who might be overqualified and not have the technical skills needed for data entry.

Let's suppose that this position will require taking information from forms turned in by other departments, and entering all of the information into one global database for easy access and organization. (This is a typical example of a data entry position.) The right employee for this job will need to be a very organized person in general.

Naturally, some college education would be nice. However, keep in mind that those with a degree may be looking for a higher pay rate, and your company may not have the budget to pay a lot for this particular department.

Instead of relying simply on a resume citing college and field experience (or lack thereof) or relying on an interview, try creating a test that challenges the skills of the applicants. The results of this test will give you a very good idea of who is the best person for the job.

For example, you could have each applicant create a database, and generate some fake numbers for them to crunch, or some fake info for them to organize. Make these numbers and/or information similar to the actual information that will be used on the job daily.

The right applicant will be fast and efficient, organized, have good grammar and spelling, and accurate math skills. Even if the spreadsheet or calculators they may be using are computers, there needs to be a human element to double check everything just in case.

If you approach it right, finding a data entry employee who is ideal for the job (and can work at a reasonable pay rate) can be a breeze.
