[W946]Wooden Doors And Windows
by Brian Roman, Bri

Are Wooden Doors Really a Better Choice?

The wooden door may stand out as the better option but lets explore the nature of the door more closely.

Firstly, wooden doors are attractive. They have a visible wood grain with a lustrous shine. To maintain their lovely finish though the doors require painting and/or varnishing. Even after years of maintenance the door will lose its shine and eventually rot. Quality wooden doors can have a longevity of about 25-35 years, depending on the type of wood used. Without maintenance the lifespan of the door is dramatically reduced to just a few years.

The doors may be strong when they are first made, but over time heat changes and general wear and tear weaken the door. Wooden doors have been known to swell, bow, warp and even crack. These changes cause draughts which reduce the insulating properties of the door. The weakened door also poses a risk to break-ins.

On top of these flaws wooden doors are very costly, being the most expensive over both composite and uPVC doors.

What Makes Composite Doors the Better Option?

On the surface composite doors probably don't seem like the preferred choice - a cheap, synthetic door, made to look like a nice wooden door.

There are many advantages to composite doors though. The door is designed to excel where other doors fail, and is made from different materials each chosen for their individual qualities.

Each one is thick and sturdy, but also relatively lightweight. Unlike other doors they won't warp or twist in heat changes, and unlike wooden doors they won't crack. This is due to the reinforced skin which has an attractive timber grain finish. The strength of the skin means the door can not be kicked in and the locks installed in composite doors provide optimum security. The door is wipe-clean and does not need painting as it won't fade or discolour over time.

Composite doors are foam filled which makes their insulating quality six times higher than that of wooden doors. As the doors don't change shape over time they remain draught proof and energy efficient.

The affordability of composite doors does not reflect their high quality and attention to detail.

Conclusion

The traditional charm of the wooden door has made an otherwise outdated concept a viable choice next to, what was previously the only other option, cheap plastic uPVC doors. Composite doors not only combine the qualities of both uPVC and wooden doors, but also improve on the flaws, creating a whole new standard in the door industry. It is now becoming more and more apparent that this line of front door is her to stay and while on paper is more expensive it is still a sound investment that will not devalue any property but only enhance your homes charm.

As a house owner, you'll have the chance to choose the type of doors you would want to be installed in your house. Some of doors you could choose from are:

?Panel doors which are primarily made out of rails and stiles. Some panel doors are considered wooden doors or if made from solid lumber. Some however are also made of glass even metals.

?Hollow Core Wood Doors are best for interior usage only as these are typically made of pure wood.

?Hollow metal insulated are usually made of welded metals and are fire resistant.

?Solid core doors on the other hand are laminated plywood or metal and have this compressed wooden core.

The importance of considering which type of door is best for you is equivalent to your consideration of your security and the style of your house. These days, many would prefer to use the hollow metal insulated type of doors especially for house-remodeling purposes. With the tampered and tightly installed glass, the hollow metal door could prevent dust, air, water and insects penetration.

However, if you're a home owner who prefers to accentuate beauty, performance and style, choosing wooden doors out of PVC or the hollow metal insulated doors would be your best choice. While it's true that wooden doors have features far from that of PVC or the hollow metal insulated, you may be surprised how wooden doors perform their best when these are preserved, when made with fine and high quality materials and installed perfectly in your house.

Both interior and exterior wooden doors can alleviate the beauty of your house regardless of the occasion. That said, you as a house owner would want to understand how to take care of your wooden doors and by that, it means taking extra precautionary steps whenever you clean these wooden doors. Some of the highly suggested wooden door caring includes the use of non-abrasive cleaner. You can purchase a good commercial cleaner in any department stores that sell home caring materials.

On the other hand, if you have just reinstalled or have your wooden door replaced, you may want to check if the wood used for your newly installed door is excellent enough. By excellence, this means checking for any marks or even minor defects occurred prior to installation or improper handling. Once checked, have the repairman or the installing crew repair or fix these marks or defects before installing your wooden doors. Understand that ignoring these defects may compromise the longevity of your wooden doors and the beauty of your entrance area.

Lastly, recheck the wooden doors after these are installed and determine if there are unwanted screws or scratches produced right after the installation. In the even that either you want wooden doors to replace your hollow metal or PVC, always scout for best offers available for you.
