In 1998 where the dotcom booming reached its peak, eBay, the world's first online auction site became even bigger. It started to encourage people to list more than just collectible items, and rapidly became a gigantic website where you could sell almost anything you have in mind, large or small, from an antique coin to an aircraft carrier. eBay survived the end of the dotcom booming and is still going strong today.
Ultimately, eBay bought out half.com, an Amazon-like online retailer, in the year 2000 (the same year it introduced ?Buy it Now? feature) and finally acquired PayPal, the largest online payment service, in 2002.
Pierre Omidyar, the founder, has now earned approximately $5 billion from eBay, and still serves as Chairman of the Board. Strangely enough, he still keeps his personal weblog at http://pierre.typepad.com. There are now literally millions of items bought and sold every day on eBay, by professional traders and ordinary folks from all over the world. It is once estimated that for every $100 spent online worldwide, $14 is spent on eBay. That means; eBay owns 14% share of total global spending on the Internet.
With that said; who dares to defy its influence?
Now that you know the history, perhaps you'd like to know how to make money on eBay? Well, there are a few little things that you have to keep in mind if you want to get started.
Making money on the world's biggest online auction site is basically a single click away. eBay doesn't care who you are, where you live, what your background is, or what you look like. The PowerSeller on eBay can be an old man from a large company or a teenage girl you just met this morning on the street.
The bottom line is; everybody can have the same opportunity to make money.
eBay tears down the barriers to earning a decent income that the real world always puts up, because there's no job interview and no commuting involved. If you can post things, then you can make money on eBay. It's that simple.
For example; if you know some place to get a low priced item so that you could resell it for a reasonable price, then you can resell the item on eBay. And because you can get more discounts if you purchase in bulk quantity all the time at wholesale market, it's not exactly hard to make a living on eBay!
Now, if you want to test the water first before you get your feet wet and commit to actually stock anything, then you can just find things that you've got lying around in your house and then sell them on eBay for a profit. Search through that cupboard of things you never use, and you'll probably got a few hundred dollars' worth of stuff lying around in there!
Believe me, there is always someone out there who wants what you're selling, whatever it might be. The best part is; you don't even need to do anything else to get them to buy your item because they will come looking for it themselves.
And that is the true power of eBay.
I've been on eBay longer than most people have known about it and I have seen a ton of changes. But they haven't really affected what I do or how much I make. My bottom line has just continued to increase over the years. I signed up and started buying in 1997 and began selling full time in 1998. This was before eBay was part of the common language and before most people realized you could make a living on it. 11 years is a long time in the real world, let alone the computer and internet world, so you imagine the changes I've seen on eBay. But it's not really about eBay's changes, it's about consistency as a seller. What to sell, where to find it and how to list it. The key is not just finding things that have value to resell; the key is to do it over and over and over and to maximize the item for the most profit. With constant changes from eBay-fee increases, policy changes, etc.-my bottom line has only gone up. I know how to make eBay listing "pop" and get maximum dollars. [Quick Fact: As of October, money orders and checks are being eliminated as payment options on eBay] Knowing something has value is one thing, but knowing how to get the most profit out of the item is much more important. And believe me, I know first hand. There was a time when even I struggled to get the profit. In the beginning there was disaster after disaster, and miscalculation after miscalculation. But then there were the stunning victories. Seeing as this was my main source of income I had to keep my focus in the game. I learned techniques and strategies that worked time and time again- it was so easy that it made me laugh. But it took a bit of time. After many trials I perfected a system that is foolproof and a money maker like no other. Now, I am a lazy guy. I probably should've put that out there first. I don't like to work, and in fact, it's a danger to my health. That was how I got to where I am. When I was born I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, a deadly lung disease. The doctors notified my parents that they shouldn't expect me to live past seven years of age-yikes. Working full time was not an option unless frequent and long hospital stays were desired. I couldn't pay the bills since working the hours couldn't be done, and the option of living with Mom for life was definitely not an option. So I panicked. I began to sell everything in my apartment after my roommate moved out. And I do mean everything. Here was a surprise- things I thought would be worth money were worthless. Then, the things I just about threw into the garbage brought me more many than I imagined. Maybe not something crazy like thousands of dollars, but it added up very nicely. I noticed a pattern after a while with these items and found that they were available everywhere. People were just passing them up constantly. In everyday placesoften even in their own home, directly beneath their noses. This was awesome. It hardly took any time at all for me to find these things, buy them, and then list them. It all added up to consistent profit right away. It has been a secret I have kept for many years now. Even friends and family members have always been wanting to know what it is I do and how exactly do I do it. They know I am a lazy guy and wonder how I can make money and live like it is Saturday every day of the week. I've been holding on to my incredible method for years, but no matter where I go (even right where here where I live) there simply is too much stuff. There is simply too much of it out there for me to do it alone. Although I wish I could. [Quick Fact: The new feedback is something everyone knows about. Sellers are now unable to leave "negatives" for buyers, positive is the only option. But buyers still can leave all three types of feedback: negative, positive, and neutral. However, are you aware that "neutrals" count the same as negatives towards the feedback of a seller?] I sell online every single day, and no matter the economy, no matter what the trend, I am always profitable without any hassles. I look around from time to time and see other experienced sellers making some of the mistakes I used to and it makes me cringe. They could be making so much more money and without the hassle they put inadvertently create. Anyone can do it because it's easy. And the best part of making an extra income on eBay is that you do it on your time. Design your own hours while relaxing on the sofa as you earn an income. Even earning money while you sleep becomes a quick discovery when you follow the proven steps. The fastest, low risk, and easiest way to make extra money is still on eBay even with all the policy changes and economy.
