Plants are very calming as they would never foster violent behaviors. And you still get to have self-satisfaction when you see that you have created something so beautiful with just your hands. Moreover, through such activity, you can see how much dedication you could actually expend even to a non-talking being.

If you already have a long-running and sustained garden, you can jumpstart your herb sanctuary by modifying your plants. You could exercise your creativity by putting in some additional herbs. Cut and re-plant some that have been growing too tall or too evolving. You can re-paint some old pots. Change the positions of the herbs. You might be surprised that you may discover a new artistic part of yourself.

If the type of garden you have only has one category of herbs, you might want to explore other types of herbs. If you are into the perennial culinary herbs, include perennial aromatics. Aromatherapy is one of the most cost-effective and really gratifying experiences one could get from fresh herbs.

In developing your herb sanctuary, you could also ask other people to help you redecorate the garden. You could also forge or strengthen your relationship with the people you love by including them in your new project. It would be a more fun activity if you include your partner, kids or friends. Maybe, you could ask for some ideas too. And in the future, you can even get them to appreciate your plants and perhaps gain new allies in maintaining your garden.

Here are some more ideas that could make your new private place reflective of pure relaxation and calmness. You can install a hammock. Add comfortable chaise lounges or bean bags. Stack a couple of your favorite reading materials. When you are with other people, even cleaning and de-weeding the herbs could become an enjoyable time. Put up a game and reward someone who gets to have the largest pile of weeds. Devise other games that involve your herbs. “Guess what plant is this” could be exciting, especially if it had been a long time since you have tugged out all the weeds.

There are myriads of activities that you could do with your garden. With all these at hand, you gain everything in the end. You make yourself an all-new and improved herb garden which may come off really inviting even to other people.

If you are a beginning gardener, designing an herb garden may seem daunting. But, with the right tools, plants and know-how, turning a ho-hum corner in your lawn into a bed of culinary delicacies can be achieved in as little as a weekend. So, roll up your sleeves, and get ready to get your hands dirty.

Prepare the Bed

After you’ve designated the area in which you would like to grow herbs, remove existing plants and grass until you have bare section with which to work. Next, add in a layer of well-decomposed compost, which you can purchase at a local nursery or home-improvement store. Dust the area with a multipurpose fertilizer.

With a garden fork or rototiller, till the compost and fertilizer into the soil. Upon completion, you should have loose soil that is perfect for planting.

Choosing the Right Plants

Before you make a trip to the nursery or home-improvement store to purchase the herbs for your garden, take note of how much sun the area receives throughout the day. Does it get full sun or partial sun? Or, is it in full shade? This will help you determine what plants to purchase for your herb garden.

Once you’re in the plant-purchasing process, select herbs that you are confident that you’ll use. There’s no reason to select am exotic variety of sage if you don’t foresee yourself cooking with it. A great tip is to review your spice cabinet prior to buying plants. If you use oregano, basil and rosemary, then purchasing the common varieties of these tasty treats makes sense.

Planting Know-how

Once you’re ready to plant your herbs, make sure you have all the tools you’ll need. Since you’ve taken the time to work your soil, all you’ll need is a small hand trowel and watering can.

Dig a hole for each plant that is no deeper than the herb’s container. Read the information tag that is usually included in each pot to ensure proper spacing between plants; this will help avoid overcrowding your herbs.

When you pull the plant from its container, gently loosen the roots with your fingers. Insert each plant into its hole, pulling the soil to cover just above where the dirt line was when the herb was in its original container"slightly lower than the plant’s first set of leaves.

Press the dirt into the hole with your hands to secure the herb in its new home. Water thoroughly, and add more dirt, if needed, as the water may collapse any air pockets that may have been in the soil.

Once you’ve planted all of your herbs, mulch the entire bed to reduce weeds and maintain moisture. You may use bark, pine needles, straw, grass clippings or whatever is available at your local nursery or home-improvement store.

By following these steps, you can have an herb garden that is functional and flavorful, as well as eye pleasing.
