The Top 5 Acne Myths You Should Know
by Terence Young, Ter

The Acne treatment industry is a multi-million dollar market with product manufacturers claiming to each have the newest most effective acne fighting treatment on the market. With the range and selection available on the market these days from toners, to acne creams and solutions there is great confusion amongst sufferers as to what really works and what is just a hype.

Here are some myths that are dispelled for you below to help you with your approach to acne fighting:

1.Acne is curable. Whilst many may claim that they have the new cure for acne after using their product this myth is actually false. Treatments can help prevent and deal with the acne but there is at present no actual cure for acne. Using treatments and remedies are useful to help you control your outbreaks and if acne becomes severe it is wise to consult a dermatologist who can prescribe medications that will treat severe cystic acne problems.

2.Sun exposure will help reduce my acne. Certainly this myth has been around for some time as sufferers started to see a subjective reduction in acne severity with the amount of sun exposure they got. Whilst this might be a great excuse to get a great tan and treat your acne at the same time this myth is another false remedy that has no scientific basis and no correlation to being an effective treatment for acne. Sun may temporarily mask your acne, tighten up pores, or dry up the oil glands. However, the sun will also damage your follicular walls clogging your pores. Resulting in more acne that may not surface for 3-4 weeks after your sun exposure.

3. Washing your face more often. Whist good hygiene is a great routine whether you have acne or not, washing your face aggressively or repetitively will not reduce or prevent your acne from occurring. The aggressive approach to cleaning may actually do more harm than good. There are many acne commercials that seem to depict a pore clogged with dirt and their face wash comes in and miraculously cleans and clears the pore and then you see a picture of a blemish free actor smiling. Acne is actually caused much deeper in your skin then what washing could ever hope to reach and topical solutions like face wash do nothing to treat the cause of acne. They only serve to keep the surface skin clean and clear. The best approach is to wash your face twice daily using a solution that is not irritating to the skin.

4. Junk food and chocolate causes acne. Dermatologists seem to be united in the notion that there is no prevailing wisdom to suggest that acne is caused by eating oily foods or chocolate. However, we are all individuals and if you believe that eating such foods seem to correlate with an outbreak of acne then a simple solution is to either avoid the foods since they aren't exactly healthy for you anyway or keep a food diary and see if there is anything to suggest that it was a particular food that seems to cause the acne.
