[W835]Windows Mobile Internet Device
by Kamal Hussain, Kam

Mobile internet devices (MID) is an amazing new gadget, it will revolutionise the way we communicate and conduct business on the move. The Mobile Internet Device (MID) is a multimedia-capable handheld computer providing wireless Internet access via 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. They are designed to provide entertainment, information and location-based services, which will allow users to access real time information on-the-go with full browser based capabilities. In a nutshell a Mobile Internet Device would be device mid-way between mobile phones and computers.

With the constant development of new Internet services and the growth of the web 2.0 phenomenon, companies like Yahoo, Google, MySpace, Skype Google Maps are developing and creating exciting new products and services, such as cloud enabled modules and applications, this goes to show that the future of mobile computing rests in devices that are truly mobile, always connected and providing a rich Internet browsing experience to the end users at all times.

As the Internet Device market expands and consumers gain confidence in the product ability to perform, an architectural battle is being waged between major hardware and software vendors for market capitalisation, this is especially evident between Intel and ARM corporation, as they are encroaching on each other's turf in much the same way that Symbian and Mac OS X are battling for mess market dominance for Mobile OS platform.

Intel started this fight by challenging ARM with the Atom processor, which is moving downmarket and towards powering Smartphone and communication devices. Intel's strategy is to provide X86 based processors that will "offer leading performance while reducing the footprint and power consumption. Atom processors are currently featured in the majority of net books and on some Internet Devices which are available on the market.

ARM instruction set, which dominates mobile phone and PDA's isn't widely known outside the mobile communication industry, but it designs processor cores for chips that power more than 90 percent of the world's mobile communication devices.

ARM's director of mobile solutions, Rob Coombs has confirmed that a number of manufacturers have agreed to build netbooks and Mobile Internet Devices powered by the ARM architecture, I assume some of the manufacturers belong to the ARM Processor Foundry licensee's Program.

ARM chief executive officer ,”Warren East has made the following statement in an interview with Digi Time “We have also launched our high performance, low power consumption Cortex-A8 and A9 platforms for MID (Mobile Internet Device) products. We have strong confidence in the MID market and look forward to seeing ARM-based MID products hit the market in 2009. Currently the First Generation of Internet Devices such as the Nokia N97 and Apple iPhone both are based on the popular ARM processors.

A mobile internet device (MID) in my analysis has the correct ingredients and the mobility to shape the mobile internet world for years to come, this new gadget can have profound effect on almost every aspect of our lives just like the growing and the endless impact we have been experiencing from the development of the world-wide-web.
