[W823]Window Shades Top Down
by Judith Persit, Jud
A couple of months ago, we moved into an apartment that had the worst aluminum window blinds! At that time, my daughter was about six months old, and we had been working on her sleep schedule for the last three months. If it was not totally dark and quiet, she could not sleep. After moving in, it became apparent that the first thing that would need to be done if the baby was ever going to sleep was to buy some drapes. I bought cheap 'room darkening' drapes to put over the windows in a dark color, but even those and the cheap aluminum blinds together did not stop the sun from leaking through. Desperate, my husband taped cut up cardboard boxes to the glass windows of her room underneath the drapes. That worked for a while until the apartment manager said that the cardboard looked terrible and had to be taken down within the next few weeks. After looking online for window shade treatments and talking to many friends, a girlfriend told me about the terrific roller shades that she had just gotten. Now, I had seen roller shades before at the basement of my in-law's house. They were antiquated, and when you wanted them to roll up, if you did not do it just so, the window shades would whirl up a thousand miles an hour. But my friend swore that these were different. So I trusted her and ordered some blackout roller shades. They were fantastic! The roller shades were easy to install and so simple to use! Made of thick pieces of fabric coated with vinyl, the window shades were high quality and were incredibly easy to make go up and down. We ordered more for our own bedroom window, and I love how they can be adjusted to stay at any level you want. They never get dirty because you simply pull the bar at the bottom of the shade so you never have to touch the fabric. You do not ever have to dust them or try to untangle any cords. The bar at the bottom of the shade is just heavy enough to keep the roller shade down at all times and lying flat so that sun never creeps in.Since getting our roller shades less than a year ago, I have found out that you can get other varieties of roller window shades as well. There are varieties that you can buy that merely dim the light, but don't keep it out completely. I love bright sunlight coming in the family room of our apartment, but sometimes it is way too bright! You cannot have the window shades open if you are going to watch TV or use the computer. Solar window shades are perfect for a room like this! They say that they are called "sunglasses" for your windows because they keep out UV rays, reduce glare, and diffuse the light so that it is not so overwhelming! I love it because then you have the option of still seeing out of your window. Most window shades only offer the option of down or up, open or closed. But the solar window shades do not obstruct your view at all! Additionally, the help keep out the extra heat that sunshine makes, so in the summer you do not have to run your air conditioner more just because you wanted to be able to see outside!Compared to other window shades, I personally think that roller shades are a perfect solution to any light issue you have in your apartment or home! Do not bother fussing with other types of window shades and treatments!

Lately, people are spending more hours in the office than ever before. It is important then to have a comfortable office if we are to increase our productivity. This means less or no distractions at all. It is a fact that the busier the world gets, the higher the noise levels in the environment. But not to worry because there is something you can do to make your office less noisy. You need to get hold of window shades or roller shades.

Window shades are window treatments consisting of a shading material that is added to the window to help in blocking noise from entering the room. Window shades can be adjusted either up and down or from side to side. Additionally, window shades will keep out excess light from entering the office.

Window shades are mainly made using fabric. Other materials are also used depending on the desired effect, the level of privacy you want as well as the degree of light you wish to let in. The most common materials are bamboo shades, vinyl shades and honey comb shades.

Honeycomb and are a popular choice for many people. They trap air molecules thus saving energy. They are also clean and crisp. They feature different designs and textures. They have other options such as the cordless feature and the motorized variety. This versatility is what makes them so likable.

Cellular shades are compact and very light. They take the shape of the accordion and come in soft materials that are either woven or non-woven. They also have a battery-operated remote control, making it easy to operate them from where you are seated.

Another common type of window shades is the Roman shades. These look like draperies and are made from woven material. The fabric used to make them is heavier than that of cellular shades, but still soft.

These work in a similar way as the cellular shades. They are suitable for taller windows and sliding doors. They resemble drapery and are very efficient. Vertical shades add a contemporary look. Pleated shades are fashionable with a wide variety of colors and fabrics to choose from. They are the least priced but that is not to say they are any less effective.

Some people think that the difference between window shades and roller shades is that window shades take the shape of the window and cover the entire form, while roller shades are rolled into a tube for raising and lowering on the window, using a control system. In truth, window shades are the general category, and the other names are the individual kinds. The control system is usually a reverse gear made of springs.

Unlike previous types of roller shades, modern day roller shades are made of high quality and durable fabrics. Most of them have a decorative bar that helps in balancing weight, thus giving them a better hang. This bar also protects them from damage and adds a fashionable designer finish to the roller shades.

There is a wide variety of roller shades to from which to choose. Roller Shades darken a room by blocking out light. They have a heavier fabric that is also more durable. They work effectively when the outer fabric is 2-3 inches thicker. They can also be combined with another window treatment for greater effect.

Room darkening roller shades give you the freedom to control the amount of light in the room. You use the control system to cover the particular area of the window.

Another popular type of roller shades is the decorative fabric roller shades. It is an attractive woven fabric that is available in many colors. It blocks out noise and adds decor to your office, giving it a homely, welcoming feel. All these make everything enticing and welcoming.
