[W1005]Work With Children With
by Scott Phelps, Sco

Some work at home jobs will in fact state from the outset that it is not possible to work and have children in the room. Generally these would include phone based jobs that involve you taking customer calls, for instance an at home call center job. The job requires peace and quiet to allow you to understand the customer when they speak, and for them to understand you.

Needing to work alone need not mean that you cannot do that type of job. A predictable routine for a young child can enable you to dedicate an hour or two a day before the child wakes in the morning, during naps, and once the child retires to bed for the night. On weekends when both parents are around you can create a routine period of time when the child is with the other parent, enabling you to work for a longer period of time.

Not everyone can make their circumstances fit these needs; perhaps you are a single parent or the other parent is working so many hours that they cannot dedicate periods of time for child care. Friends and family may be able to help out, but for some it will simply not be possible to arrange time alone for work.

There are many at home jobs that do not have such requirements but still, for you to be able to work you need to be able to concentrate. Various arrangements may help you.

The simplest is to work only when the children are sleeping, as described above. Yet with other things that need to be done at these times, it might not be possible to fit in a sufficient amount of work without sacrificing a large amount of your own sleep.

Finding time to work in the day, when the children are awake can help to alleviate this problem. Activities can be provided for the children to do while you work, depending on their age. Tiny babies may be content to lie in your lap, or under a baby gym, and older children may happily sit and play with toys. Coloring sheets and activity books can engage them for a time while you work in the same room as they are. Those that want more interaction pose more of a challenge.

This is where rearranging your day can help. Children love to help and be involved in what you are doing. Take advantage of this, and get them involved in your daily chores routine! Moving tasks that you used to do whilst the children slept to the daytime and engaging the children in them can free up valuable time when the children are sleeping for you to work.

Of course, when the children start school you will have more time to dedicate to an at home job. In the meantime there are many way in which you can find time to get to work.
