by Groshan Fabiola, Gro
There are some guidelines that form the bases of fibromyalgia diet: eat of wide variety of foods in various combinations (essential vitamins, minerals and fatty acids), avoid vegetables fruits and meats that are artificially produced with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers and steroids, eat small meals as often as every three hours, raw fruits and vegetables, dried fruit, whole grain bread sticks, whole grain crackers, unsalted seeds and nuts, healthy plant fats, essential fatty acids, avoid junk food and fast food, drink 8-10 glasses of purified or distilled water daily possible, avoid caffeine, sugar as much as possible.

If a patient follows the basic guidelines of fibromyalgia diet listed above he will notice a tendency to feel better when refined sugar, caffeine, alcohol, fried foods, red meat, are kept to minimum in the diet. The cutting of sugar allow to the body to better manage. For any individual suffering from fibromyalgia syndrome eating a healthier diet can have long-term benefits. By adding greater quantities of raw or lightly cooked fruits and vegetables, substitute high fat meats with fish and vegetable protein will certainly help the patient to feel better.

Foods that are digested and converted to glucose (sugar) may low the glycemic index. Here are some examples of low glycemic index foods that can be included on the fibromyalgia diet: barley, grape fruit, beans, apples, pears, peaches and oatmeal. Drinking plenty of purified or distilled water can assure a proper nutrition. The lining of the gut and intestinal tract may be affected by taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) like: aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Heavy use of these medications may affect patients who have a predisposition to food intolerance or digestive disturbances.

When a patient uses occasional medications it is not a problem but constant or daily use will pose a health risk over time. Vitamin deficiencies and digestive problems so common in fibromyalgia can worsen by taking NSAIDs. From this point of view pain relief medications should be avoided.

Respecting and keeping a proper diet will certainly reduce fibromyalgia pains.
