The Stress Of Finances
by Jason Johns, Jas
Would you?

Have you noticed how your expenses expand to consume any extra money you earn?

I'm glad I'm not the only one it happens to.
Financial stress is a major problem for many people. The excess of month left at the end of the money is an issue for far too many people. This lack of money induces stress which can have a knock on effect in other areas of your life.

Think about it. If you are worrying about money, how does it affect your job? How does it affect your relationships? How does it affect your children?

Financial stress is a major contributor to arguments between partners and divorce, and it is something that you can overcome with some careful thought.

The first step is to be realistic about your finances. The amount of money leaving your account every month should be less than the amount of money that comes into your account.

If more money is leaving than coming in, then you have a serious problem. If that is the case, then you need to be extremely careful to avoid borrowing more money and getting further into debt. Loan companies will often present themselves as a solution to this problem, but they only solve the problem if you are disciplined. Many people reduce their outgoings through a loan and then spend this additional money without thinking about the debt they need to repay. Hence they get further and further into trouble.

Another step to reduce your financial stress is to set yourself a budget. Work out how much money you realistically have left over each month after you have met your financial obligations and that is the amount of money you have left over to do what you want with. However, remember that you do need to save some money, so put some of this away for a rainy day.

If you are in a relationship then make the finances a joint responsibility and share the load. This holds you both accountable to each other and makes sure that no problems are swept under the carpet. It also ensures you both know exactly what is going on, which will reduce the stress between you.

It is always very tempting to buy that new car, television or hi-fi on credit, but you are making false savings. Loan and hire purchase companies are desperate for you to use their services because they make a fortune from you. If you buy a car for $10,000 on credit, you could end up paying $15,000 for it, or even more!

Finally, if you really do need money, how can you (legally) earn that extra money? Can you change your job? Could you get a part time job? Can you start a home business? Could you sell some things on Ebay?
Realistically, there is only so far you can cut your outgoings before you need more incomings! If your outgoings are that excessive then you will need some more money coming in to reduce your stress.

Managing your finances will help you to manage the stress related to it. We could all do with more money, and through judicious financial management you can keep those stress levels down.
