I had been working a 60-hour week and was longing for Friday night when my girlfriends and I were set to meet at a local disco for some much deserved dancing, flirting, and drinking. Yes, this was the disco era and I was all decked out in my big hair, platform shoes, and tight fitting spandex short dress with a skirt that twirled perfectly on the dance floor. I had treated myself to a manicure over my lunch hour a gorgeous set of long acrylic nails polished hot pink. I admired my newly glamorous nails as I applied my makeup while listening to the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever.

After a quick glance at my reflection in the full length mirror, I deemed myself presentable and was out the door to pick up one of my girlfriends. Two cigarettes later, we pulled the car into the disco parking lot, opted for valet parking, and walked to the door.

We saw him at the bar the moment we arrived it was as though a spot light shone on him. Determined to make the best possible impression, we strutted to the bar, met with our other friends and ordered white wine, which we believed was a classy choice of beverage.

After some eye contact back and forth and the occasional sweet smile, he walked over to our section of the bar and began a conversation. At this point I was quite nervous and pulled out my old stand by for such times my pack of cigarettes. As I placed the cigarette in my mouth, this gentleman whose name I had yet to learn whipped out a gold lighter to light my cigarette. I leaned in close and looked into his eyes as he lit my cigarette. Our eyes held. The flame from the lighter seemed extraordinarily large and brilliant. Then his eyes became quite large and I realized that the bright flame was my artificial nail on fire. I quickly plunged my finger into my very classy glass of white wine. The fire went out, but my mortification will live on. So much for my being a class act that night.
