[A43]A Good Wedding Gift
by Anna Stenning, Ann
What makes a good wedding gifts idea? In fact, how long in advance do you need to buy a wedding gift? What constitutes a meaningful gift that both couples can enjoy without breaking the bank too much? Or better still, are preselected gifts a good way to help people find what the couple really want or is it a cheeky ploy for the couple to rinse the guest out of buying them the most expensive present they can find, thus avoiding the prospect of receiving a rather ugly and nasty gift?

There is no easy answer to this question, but there are easy common sense ways of dealing with the issue of finding a gift that does not need to be priced beyond your own budget. Recently more people are placing gift request vouchers for people to choose a suitable present from a chosen establishment. This way the couple are able to guarantee a gift they want and the guest will have no trouble choosing what is requested.

The problem with preselected wedding gifts are that they very often come with a high price tag, therefore people who are on a tight budget may find this a daunting prospect. Often some guests may find this a little cheeky and so opt to buy something of their own choice. Either way you as the guest, want to make an impression when buying a gift, depending on how well you know the couple buying a gift should be based on their interests and a symbolism of their joyous occasion.

First step to take is to start searching for a gift early. Never leave this to the last minute, as the chances are you may not find what you are looking for especially if you are on a tight budget. Visit various gift shops to find the right kind of present. Crystal photo frames, crystal champagne glasses with his and her inscribed onto the glass and home accessories are always a winner for newlyweds, as very often they will put these into use immediately.

The second step is to get an idea of the price range of the kind of gifts you would like to buy for them. How expensive are wedding gifts in general? Will it be cheaper to order from the internet? If this is the case, how long will it take before you receive the gift (in time for the wedding)? Most importantly of all, how much are you willing to spend?

Some people have spent an extortionate amount on wedding gifts that have been bought by others at a cheaper price. The most common gifts are usually dinner sets and cookery ware. It is important that you get an idea of what other people purchasing, that way you can gain inspiration of what to buy. Also try getting an insight from the couples relatives; they may be able to help you with finding the right gift.

The final thing to do is not to be disheartened by other peoples wedding gift ideas. All too often I have come across people competing over the kind of gifts they have bought and which one is the most impressive. At the end of the day, it all boils down to buying something that is memorable, nice in appearance and long lasting. This can be in the form of a home accessory, clothing, furniture, kitchenware, wall hanging, decoration or even keepsake photo album. This why you should take your time searching, something will strike your attention.

Neither of these has to be hugely expensive, just good quality and something that the couple will appreciate you for. Remember this is a symbol of their celebration so make it something bright, happy and with glimmer of your own personality.

If you love music and have a decent collection, a good way to make extra money may be to become a DJ for live events. To get up and rolling may take a small investment as a DJ must have top of the line stereo equipment and a music collection that reflects a wide variety of musical tastes, but the financial rewards can be well worth the initial expenditure. DJs are hired for any of a variety of events from school dances to weddings and Bar-Mitzvahs, and the manner in which you conduct yourself may need to vary depending on the event that you're working. Weddings are a particularly valuable market for a disc jockey and the wedding DJ often has one of the most fun jobs of anyone associated with a decent sized wedding reception. Following are some tips that can help you find success as a wedding DJ.

Let's Get it Started in Here:

A wedding reception is essentially a big party. Like any party, the reception will evolve slowly over the course of the evening and it is the responsibility of the wedding DJ to ensure that it moves along at the proper pace. When the reception first begins the wedding DJ will notice that people are milling around and talking, eating, and congratulating the happy couple. This is a good time to start playing music, making a selection that is both in line with the requested genres or tastes that should have been previously discussed with the couple or the person that hired the wedding DJ. Something upbeat but not overpowering is good here.

When it is time for the dancing to start, it's time for the party to start. Sometimes people are a bit shy to get going. It is at this point that the wedding DJ needs to show some personality. Get on that microphone and motivate people to get on the dance floor and move. Make some congratulatory statements to the newlyweds and tell the guests to get out there and shake it.

Once You've Sold it, Don't Buy it Back:

Now that you've got the music going and the dance floor is full, shut your pie hole! No one comes to a wedding reception to hear the wedding DJ blather on into the microphone like a wannabe Howard Stern. If it's fallen on you to announce mini reception events like a dollar dance or the removal of the garter, then do so, but speak as little as possible. Let the music move the party and keep that microphone securely in the upright and locked position.

Hey, Mr. DJ… Put a Record on:

Requests equal tips for the wedding DJ. If a guest approaches you with a song request that falls into the category of music that you've been hired to spin, get it on there post haste. People get all warm and fuzzy inside when they hear a song that they specifically requested.

Finally, two things that every wedding DJ should have in his collection are copies of The Hokey Pokey and The Chicken Dance. Treat these like the American Express Card of the wedding DJ: don't leave home without them.
