Getting A Handle On Costs When Moving

Advice on Getting a Handle on Costs When Moving

Moving from home to home can be an expensive proposition. Setting aside the costs of procuring a new home - if you're buying a house you need the money to close on it and other fees, if you're renting you'll need to have your security deposit ? you also need to have enough money to physically move all of your things from place to place. Budgeting is a good way to make sure that you'll be able to afford all of the costs that go along with changing households.

One of the first areas that you'll have to set aside money for is the new home itself. Besides the costs mentioned above, there are several other fees that you're going to have to pay when you move into your new place. You'll need to budget money to make your new place livable ? this can mean cleaning fees, painting, getting new appliances and more. Depending on whether you're purchasing your next home or renting, this can run into quite a bit of money. You'll also need to leave your last home in decent condition ? which can mean paying to clean and paint your old house.

Another step is to make sure that you budget enough money for the costs involved with moving your furniture and other household items from place to place. This can mean paying for a moving van rental, or even paying for movers to move your items for you. You can save money by choosing to move your own household items, but depending on the size of your house, it may be worth spending the extra money to have professional movers work for you.

A final bit of advice involves budgeting money for your personal moving expenses. These expenses would be the costs of moving yourself and your family (including pets) from your old home to your new home. If you need to cross a long distance, there's the cost of plane tickets or other modes of transportation for your family. If you're traveling a shorter distance, there are still expenses associated with fuel for your car, meals (you probably won't be able to cook for a while after moving into your new home!) and other incidentals.

Budgeting for your move can seem a little difficult and time consuming, but you'll appreciate the fact that you've set aside the funds to make your move go more smoothly. A spreadsheet to keep track of how much you need to spend is also a good trick to making your budgeted money go further.
