Ways To Save A Few Bucks When Moving
by Lou Ross, Lou
Much of the expense involved with moving is related to items that are unavoidable. You will need to pay for items such as setting up your new home (making it livable), cleaning your old home and transporting your household items from one place to another. However, there are ways to cut down on the cost of most of these tasks, and this can be accomplished in simple ways. If you're willing to do the work yourself, you can save a bundle ? and here are some ways to do it.

One really easy way to save money is on boxes. Many people have no idea where to obtain large, sturdy boxes for moving ? so they resort to purchasing boxes from moving companies or van lines. While these boxes are guaranteed to be sturdy, as well as pristine and clean, they are not cheap. Most families can expect to spend about $100 on boxes alone if they choose to get their equipment this way. You can save this $100 by going to grocery stores, liquor stores and even copy shops and asking for their old boxes. These are often sturdy boxes that have only been used once, are relatively clean, and are totally free.

Another area where you can save money is with moving trucks. The most expensive way to move is to hire a moving company. These professional movers will pack your truck (and sometimes your home) and get your items from your old house to your new home, but they are costly. If you choose to move your own belongings (pack your own truck and items), and drive yourself, you can save a bundle. Save even more by doing some research ahead of time and finding the best truck rental rate in your area ? sometimes there are even Internet specials and coupons to make it cheaper.

A final bit of advice involves packing your fragile belongings. Many people don't realize how important it is to keep your breakables well packed ? and the easiest way is to use your home linens and clothing to pack these fragile items. Newspaper, bubble wrap and other items may seem easier to use, but they can cost money and be a nuisance to get rid of. If you choose to use your own linens, you can just launder them when you get to your new home.

Moving is hardly a fun event, but it can cause you less if you plan ahead.
