What is the public domain?Briefly,it isarticles, books, music, prints and films etc which are no longer incopyright and therefore free to use by everyone for whatever purposethey please. The items have therefore become public property.
There are laws which restrict the useof copyright material but articles are said to be in the publicdomain if there are no laws to restrict their use.But be careful, what might be in the public domain in one country, might not be inanother country.
In most countries the copyright term isaround the 20 year mark then it will have to be renewed otherwise itwill fall into the public domain. On exception is ?trademarkregistration?which ,as long as the owner continues to use the itemin question, lasts indefinitely.
Most countries specify that a number ofyears must pass after thedeath of the last surviving creator. It varies from country to countrybut the term is usually 50 to 70 years.
USAlaws(copyright)have changed a number of times over the years.Government works areautomatically in the public domain ,such as military and courtarticles, unless created by an outside agency as these could be stillcopyrighted.Usually it is 120 years after the publication in moststates that an item is released ,but in some circumstances could besooner.Anything created after the 1stJanuary 1989 gets automatic copyright licence till 70 years after theauthor's death. In the case of joint authors or creators it is 70years after the last surviving creator.
In the UK worksare either under crown copyright or parliamentary copyright.Published crown copyright articles fall into the public domain after50 years, unless assigned to the crown by the creator, then it's lifeplus 70 years.Unpublished works enter the public domain after 125years.
Legislation inAugust 1989 stipulated that no unpublished work will be in the publicdomain until 2039.
?This is allvery well and good but how can I make money from the public domain ??I hear you ask.
'?Quiteeasily? I reply!Look hard enough on the internet and you will findall manner of places to extract public domain material. Then it's upto you and your imagination how you dispose of it.
You can sell iton one of the many auction sites springing up,sell it on your ownsite therefore creating your own business.By mail order is anotherway. The possibilities are endless.Have photos made into tablemats, key rings or placed on cups(there are many sites who will dothis).Frame old prints or laminate maps you are only limited by yourown imagination.
So if you wantto make money on the internet this is one way which won't cost you anarm and a leg!
