With the proliferation of Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging equipment with hard drive resident operating system we receive a number of trouble calls that can be attributed directly to poor power. This is especially bad during the seasonal transition into winter and then again as we first experience the onset of summer. These changes are accompanied by interrupted power, missing cycles, surges and brownouts that can cripple an Ultrasound system by fragmenting, crashing or causing system shutdowns that leave operating systems locked out.
The solution we recommend and the solution recommended by most OEM's is the purchase and installation of an in-line Uninterruptible Power System/Supply. The In-Line UPS, also call a dual conversion or double conversion UPS, is designed to alleviate these problems. A properly specified in-line UPS will provide adequate time for the Sonographer to do an orderly shutdown of their Ultrasound system after a power failure. Since this particular UPS design continuously converts AC to DC (battery) then dc to ac it automatically replaces missing AC cycles, maintains a steady output during brownouts and surges virtually eliminating the majority of power fluctuation related system failure. The UPS you choose must be an in-line UPS, an off the shelf office supply UPS is not a good substitute since they normally are in a dormant standby state and have and off to on transit time which will make problems worse.
