Saabs AlcoKey Breathalyzer: Drunkards Off The Road!
by Shane Morgay, Sha
Due to the alarming number of road accidents, collisions and misdemeanors relating to drunkenness and with the stirring desire to reduce the intensifying number, automakers conducted several studies and experiments to come up with a system that could reduce such driving consequences. Saab, for now is paving way for its clever innovation dubbed as Alcokey Breathalyzer System.

Saab announced Alcokey Breathalyzer System at around this time in the previous year. Since then, the automaker continued the research and development phases. Eventually, said system was created. Now, it is set to be launched in a test trial.

Alcokey system is designed to keep drunkard drivers off the road. It has the ability to lessen the rate of drinking and driving in automobiles. To boot, Alcokey is a small- scale breathalyzer that is to be connected to the ignition system of the car. Hence, before starting up, it must be first linked to the car's immobilizer and on-board security system. After that, the driver must blow into the AlcoKeys breathalyzer for 3 seconds to take a reading. Automatically, the system will illuminate either a red light - which means that the car is armed, or a green light ? which means that the engine immobilizer has already been disarmed through by a wireless signal. If all-clear signal is given by the system, it means that the driver is given one minute to start the engine.

Alcokey is made more efficient, refined, practical and accurate though still uses same principles as before. The original system is long and skinny. Now, it is made wider and flatter to match well with Saab automotive accessories and parts. Said system comes with a protective cap to protect its mouthpiece.

Unlike earlier model, the latest Alcokey from Saab is rechargeable. Its battery can be recharged using a 12-volt outlet. The system's transmitter is also made more powerful to transmit signal from up to 32 feet. This is done to diminish the burden of the driver and lessen some inconveniences. Further, the system can also be used as a personal breathalyzer his own alcohol level. The built-in temperature sensor enables the system to know whether the sample came from human or inanimate object like balloon and pump.

Drinking and driving must be prevented to minimize its ill effects and to enhance safety of both vehicle occupants and pedestrians. Saab Alcokey Breathalyzer System will begin its trial test on 100 different government and taxi fleets. Said testing, which will be happening soon, will be participated by the automaker's executives.
