Valerian - Eases Nervous And Anxious Symptoms
by James Penn, Jam
Valerian root is a useful and respected plant which can be used in the treatment of a number of illnesses. For many years, practitioners have respected the healing powers of Valerian, especially in the treatment of nervous system ailments. It is useful in promoting relaxation and a feeling of calm.

The bulb and the root are used extensively in healing. Valerian root contains a number of healing components - valereal, valeranone, azulene, borneol and others. The oils from the root have been shown to calm nerves and to have anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects too. Alkaloids are used to relax the body and as a pain reliever.

Common sense is important in determining herb safety. Botanical preparations have been used for centuries for healing but it is known that herbs contain active substances which is why they should only be taken under the supervision of a practitioner familiar with herbal medicine. Studies have been undertaken for this reason. Valerian has very few records of causing side effects but when taking a large dose of any herbal or chemical preparation, toxicity is always a possible risk.

A study was undertaken and showed than Valerian had to be taken at twenty times its recommended dose to cause any level of toxicity. The toxicity effects in this case did not last long and were not serious. AHPA (The American Herbal Products Association) approves Valerian as a Class 1 Safety Rated herb.

Valerian is useful in the treatment of various stress-related illnesses like nervous exhaustion, insomnia, a depressed state or anxiety. Some nerve disorders can also be treated with it, like sciatica, neuralgia or multiple sclerosis.

Nerve disorders can cause tingling or numb feelings or weakness in the muscles and Valerian has been found to ease symptoms. Children showing behavioral problems like anxiety, hyperactivity or learning difficulties were given an extract of Valerian and a surprising 75% of them showed a marked improvement in their symptoms without side effects. If you suffer from insomnia, Valerian reduces sleep induction time, possibly by influencing GABA levels in order to cause sedation. Valerian is globally well known for promoting sleep.

Valerian root can be used together with various other healing herbs, such as hops, gingko bilboa, chamomile and passion flower, or with vitamins, minerals or a range of other supplements, and is an efficacious healing agent for sufferers of depression or anxiety related illnesses.
