Many very deadly diseases have torn through the world over the years. Most of these terrible diseases have now been cured and a vaccine has been developed for them, so that future generations do not have to suffer like previous generations suffered. Most of the vaccines are given as a one-time shot, and then you never have to worry about getting that disease for the rest of your lifetime. After receiving a vaccine you usually do not feel very well, because the vaccine is usually a very small portion of the disease, so you do feel some symptoms.
Since only a small amount of the disease or a variation of the disease is given to you, your body is able to fight off the infection and build up antibodies that will protect you from now on. Many states require that certain vaccines are given to children before they can start school. I believe that this is a very good practice, because it makes your children less susceptible to sicknesses that can cause them great harm and sometimes even cause death.
I do not know why you would not want your child to get vaccinated. Some people do not like to have to give their children a shot, but many states have mandatory seatbelt laws, which also protect your child from harm. There is not much difference between a seatbelt law and requiring vaccines by law. I know that some states are now looking into requiring a vaccine to protect women from getting HPV, because it has been discovered that HPV can lead to cervical cancer.
This vaccine might warrant some resistance, because HPV is usually transmitted through sexual intercourse, and making a child get this vaccine implies that a child might be sexually active at an early age. Some people also believe that having this protection might make girls feel “safer”, so they might be more willing to have sex. Personally, I think that anything I can do to help my child live a healthier and a happier life is the right thing to do.
