The New Jersey (NJ) Nets had their origins in the American Basketball Association (ABA), when Arthur Brown ? the trucking magnate ? was awarded a franchise in 1967. Under pressure from the New York Knicks, a team already well entrenched in New York, this new team, which wanted to base itself at Manhattan's East End, was forced to locate itself at Teaneck, New Jersey. At the same time, intending to call itself the New York Freighters, it was forced to change name to New Jersey Americans.

In 1968, the team was renamed the New York Nets, and based itself at Long Island, New York. When the ABA merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA), it joined the NBA. Prior to the 1977-78 season, the New York Nets moved base back to New Jersey, and renamed itself the New Jersey Nets. Since 1981, the NJ Nets has called the Continental Airlines Arena ? then known as the Brendan Byrne Arena ? its home.

The Continental Airlines Arena ? the home of the NJ Nets ? is a multipurpose indoor arena in the massive Meadowlands Sports Complex. The NJ Nets share their home with the New Jersey Devils ? the hockey team. The Continental Airlines Arena has 19,968 seats for the NBA games held there.

The Continental Airlines Arena opened on July 2, 1981, and was known as the Brendan Byrne Arena ? after the then governor of New Jersey. It was named the Continental Airlines Arena on January 1, 1996, but is commonly referred to as the Meadowlands Arena by the media and the people. The NJ Nets may move to a new home in the near future, as the Continental Airlines Arena intends to re-configure its seating for concerts by reducing its capacity by around 4,000 seats.

The Team

The NJ Nets, then known as the New York Nets, finished last in their first New York season in1968. They advanced to their first ABA final in 1972, but lost to the Indiana Pacers 4-2 in the best of seven series. However, they beat the Utah Stars in 1974 to win their first ABA final, and repeated their feat by beating the Denver Nuggets in 1976.

Talking of recent history, the NJ Nets reached the top of the Atlantic Division in the 2005-2006 season. In the latter part of March, they won 14 games in a row ? equaling the franchise record set in 2004. They defeated the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the NBA playoffs in 2006, but lost the following round to the Miami Heat. Their 2005-2006 season ended with a 49-33 win-loss record.
