Setting Specific Goals To Increase Success In Your Business

But what is a 'specific goal'? A goal incorporating an action plan that lays down ways and means of achieving that goal is a specific goal. A specific goal also needs to provide a way in which is can be measured, to know whether the goal has been achieved. This measuring is usually against a specified date or a given time frame. But it can consist of any other objective criteria by which it can be determined. The goal also needs to be attainable. Unrealistic goals however specifically serve no purpose and are destined for failure.

For example, if you set a business goal like 'Increase the number of clients' it would not amount to a specific goal since it is vague. A specific goal would be more like: 'Supply product x/y/z as bonus along with all orders over abc to increase client strength by at least 10 percent before June end'.

If you are really serious about higher levels of success, do not set goals that are easily achievable. Stretch a little and aim for something slightly higher than what you think is easily attainable. Specific business goals aimed at success also need to be relevant. Take care to avoid setting goals that lack proper focus and would simply keep you busy. You would end up wasting precious resources, without achieving anything worthwhile.

Patience is a prerequisite for attaining success in business. If your measurements indicate a low achievement, dont be disappointed and slow down or stop. Be persistent and set fresh goals putting in sustained efforts for achievement and you are sure to find gradual improvement in your goal setting skills.

When you set an ambitious goal, it may appear huge and unattainable, but let that not act as a deterrent. Break down the bigger goal into small, easily achievable goals. If the main goal is set against a lengthy time frame of say six months or one year, create smaller sub-goals against weekly or monthly targets. These small sub-goals are like individual building blocks, which together make up the entire structure of your ultimate larger goal. Each one carries its own importance and is responsible for completing some part of the series of activities and events that lead to the successful attainment of the final objective.

It is necessary to constantly review your goal. When you have broken down your main goal into specific short-term goals; make a list and keep it where it remains in view. This will let you monitor progress and will keep reminding you of what is to be achieved within the next few days/weeks.

When you have a long-term goal, there may occur a change in your business focus midway. Review your goals and dont hesitate to modify or alter your goals if changed circumstances demand this. It is crucial to have flexibility as a goal-setting component for success.
