[B945]Build Own Chicken Coop
by Mark Johnson, Mar
When it is time to house your chickens and build, chicken coop construction is simple for a small unit. Some small operations have a simple chicken coop that protects the small flock from the weather and predators. The sticking part is finding the appropriate set of plans to accommodate the needs and features you wish to have.

The hardest and worst job in maintaining a chicken coop is cleaning out of the waste. I have seen chicken coops with sliding roofs and roofs on hinges to help assist in this job. Several chicken coops are so large a person can go inside and clean them out. All of these methods are functional but for me still leave something to be desired. If one of the walls was detachable either by sliding or on hinges, this would make keeping the insides easier to clean.

This can be prepared by making the removable wall at the opposite end at which the chicken enters the chicken coop. Having the wall either slant down or open to the side would allow the farmer to get each nook and cranny of the interior clean. Keeping the waste cleaned up is vital to a healthy flock. The locking mechanism can be as simple as a set of hooks.

The proper material to cover the floor of the chicken coop is also significant. A lot of farmers just use hay or straw. This has worked for years on most farms but since kitty litter can be purchased for about $2.50 at the local discount store. This will not only help soak up the waste but also avoid it from being absorbed by the floor.

The floor should still be covered with straw to help keep the dust from the kitty litter down. Just remember what you want when you decide to build. Chicken coop building can be fun and easy.
