Gozo Is Maltas Sister Island
by Douglas Scott, Dou
The island is small, access is by ferry, which run regularly from Cirkewwa in Malta to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo. A helicopter service which connected Gozo to Malta was stopped recently after the service was privatised some time ago.

In 2005 the island had a population of thirty one thousand of whom six thousand live in its capital Victoria, also known as Rabat.

Gozo is Maltas sister island but different many ways, the pace of life on Gozo is slower which gives a tranquil and peaceful feel away from the hustle and bustle of life. It can be described as a little taste of heaven on earth. Its quiet and rural, but has culture by the bucket load.

It is a very Catholic country, so nearly every one goes to church and because of this every year there is a large festival in the capital, Victoria. The festival commemorates the day that the Virgin Mary was told she was going to give birth to the Messiah. The whole of Gozo flocks to Victoria to celebrate and they really know how to party.

The Island is famed for its character and places of interest. Some of these are the Calypso cave, the Ggantija Neolithic temples which is the oldest man made structure. It is more picturesque than the larger sister island of Malta and the land is more fertile.

The sea is amazing its like a giant swimming pool. it has some of the best underwater visibility, which can get up to fifty meters which makes it a great country for snorkelling and scuba diving. The sea life is absolutely incredible. Fishes of all varieties, shapes and colours, in packs of hundreds and thousands. Theres also octopi, barracudas and much more.

Its finest attribute is the stunning Ramla Bay whose lurid orange red sand and crystal clear turquoise waters make it one of the finest beaches in Europe. Nearby San Blas another world class beach.

The climate can be described as mild wet winters and hot dry summers. The coldest months are January average temperatures are thirteen degrees. The hottest months are July and August average temperatures are twenty five degrees. Annual rainfall is said to be fifty cms. The sun shines for approximately six hours in December and twelve hours in July.
