Can Surgeries Solve Diabetes?
by James Troy, Jam
It is said that for every 3 Americans born in the year 2000, 1 of them is likely to be contracted with diabetes during his lifetime. This means that by the year 2050, 29 million Americans will be diagnosed with diabetes, while another 10 million will have undiagnosed diabetes. This figure is estimated by The Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Diabetes is a fatal disease that touches millions of people all over the world (not just in the United States), whether it's those with the disease, or friends and family members who are suffering the implications. Diabetes is a disorder that affects the body's ability to produce or respond to insulin, a hormone that allows blood glucose to enter the body's cells and be used for energy. Diabetes is a serious disease that can cause problems with one's heart, feet, kidneys, and eyes.

In Canada, it is said that approximately $9 billion were lost every year because of Diabetes, which is the 7th leading cause of deaths in this country. Diabetes are also known to be causing blindness among adults.

Even though diabetes surgery looks to be promising, we still need more data on the benefits and risks by performing such an operation on the patient.

Diabetic surgery is surely not a magic pill where you can expect to get rid of the illness overnight, but it is definitely a great alternative nonetheless. For type 1 diabetes, surgery is only done is certain cases. For type 2 diabetes however, surgery can't be done at all.

98% of obese diabetes patients who underwent surgeries are successful - they managed to get rid of their diabetes a few weeks later. This is not because of their weight loss, as the time interval is too short to be able to lose that much weight.

Moreover, other diabetes physicians feel that diabetic surgery should only be considered as "a last resort" after pioneering research on patients by an international team of doctors claim it can really cure the illness.

Since diabetes is a global illness feared everywhere in the world, it must be treated at the earliest possible time once a person is diagnosed with the disease. Diabetes will cause long term health issues and problems, hence it is imperative that we continue to educate ourselves with the latest developments on diabetes. This is very important if we want to survive and lead healthy lives.
