1. You need a quality autoresponder to store your leads contact information. An autoresponder is an automatic way to send email and this is one area you do not want to cut corners on.

Before you begin to do any promotion for your Internet business you need to get your autoresponder pre programmed with a few follow up messages. You also want to take a little bit of time and learn how to effectively use it and most autoresponder company's offer training on how to do that.

2. Promote your landing page and not your home page or sales page. This is an effective way to do list building because you ask your customers to give you their contact information before you share additional information with them.

A landing page should focus on giving away something of value to your reader, in exchange for their name and e-mail address. It is time well spent to create a series of various landing pages and promote several at a time to see which is most effective.

3. Free advertising allows any Internet business to work on list building. Examples of free advertising that continue to work well include article marketing, discussion forums, social networking, and others.

4. Paid advertising is something that you can do as your Internet business becomes profitable. For example pay per click advertising is very effective to get immediate traffic to your landing page. You can also automate functions within your business such as using an article marketing submission company to reach more article directories with one click.

5. Once you have your system in place, and are doing various forms of advertising, you should continue to branch out and reach more readers. Building a large list becomes easier when you can incorporate additional things such as viral marketing, affiliate marketing, off line advertising, and other methods to reach a broader audience.

In summary these are a few things that you can do to build a large list. It takes consistency over a long period of time to develop a quality list. However list building is one thing that can pay off for any Internet marketer if you stay committed to it and do it correctly.

However, just like everything else, preplanning and the right setup to create success are the things you will need to make it work for you and your e-business.

The first thing you want to be sure you don't do is get over-zealous. The one thing you need to avoid at all costs is spamming.

Spamming is still used widely, but with the government establishing more restrictions and fines you don't want this to be a problem for you. The professional image of your site will also suffer if you send mail blatantly.

Spamming requires a database that contains a huge list of e-mail addresses set up so that the message can be delivered with one click.

The problem with it (aside from the governmental restrictions and associated fines) is that it irritates the recipients and kills the validity of your campaign, which in turn kills the factors that would motivate someone to refer your site.

You need to personalize by creating your website with personal appeal. You must see to it that your website makes your customers feel safe, secure and cared for.

E-mail is important, because it is going to be one of the most affordable ways to keep in touch with your customers.

The proper way to handle email permission is to first let your customer know that you will not transmit their e-mail addresses to third party companies.

The next thing to do is to attach the need for their e-mail addresses to benefits they can receive.

For example: Coupons or discounts that are only available to members who receive e-mail notifications. With each e-mail you send the viral marketing effect takes place.
