[T1173]Topics To Write About
by Steven E, Ste
Most daunting, perhaps, is finding a topic to write about. You've already written articles about all the subjects you know best, often two or three times from different angles, and you can't use any of those subjects again. The deadline is tomorrow.

You're good at research, so that's not the problem. Usually the Muse is with you once you get going, so that's not it either. All you need is a new topic for your next article, and you'll be able to knock out a good one. How do you come up with a new subject?

It's best to let the topic come to you, to strike you in the head, if you will. In order to do this successfully, you can't be thinking about it too hard. That's certainly paradoxical!

One great way to come up with topics is the somewhat old fashioned process of reading the newspaper. Read all the sections. More often than not, there is some story that grabs your interest about some subject you've never heard of before or about one that has been scratching at the back of your consciousness for a few weeks. Often the newspaper article will provide all the facts you need to pop out an entire article of your own. If not, it doesn't take long to do a little research in Google to get the missing pieces.

Another way to find new topics is to read magazines and books for pleasure and cash in on the ideas that strike you while reading that remind you of other things. Your mind makes associations and sees things in new ways when it's relaxed by reading.

You can also observe products while food shopping. There are always plenty of items for sale you've never noticed before, and some of them are fads. Fads are good to write about because they tie into the current collective consciousness of society and therefore people are interested in reading about them.

It's good to let your mind wander. This is how different ideas that are floating around a bit aimlessly in your consciousness can suddenly juxtapose themselves atop one another in a new way.

Sometimes by purposefully pursuing this mind wandering, you can come up with several topics you've never thought of writing about before. You find yourself enthusiastic about writing your new article and effortlessly pop it out and a few more. You may even end up with a list of new topics that will keep you busy for a few weeks!

If you want to involve yourself in serious copywriting, you would be needing a continuous supply of new topics to write about. Of course, before looking into topics to write about, you should have decided on a particular niche or specific fields that you should cover. Besides, you can only write as much.

How do you choose an article topic to write about?

1. Well, first and foremost, you should choose a subject that will interest you and your targeted audience. It would be easier if you pick a subject that you have adequate knowledge of or are passionate about. You can start out by looking into what you know or what you do as hobbies. Try to pinpoint three areas that you know quite enough about then start writing.

2. You can take a look at article distributions sites such as eZine to get some ideas about what others write about. There are dozens of topics and hundreds of examples that you can follow.

3. You can also check out blog sites to generate new ideas. There are millions of blog sites all over the web catering to all kinds of topics. You can use Google's blogsearch site or Technorati.com for interesting and traffic-generating blogs. You can find a number of ideas on things you can use for your own articles.

4. If you are planning on being an expert for a particular niche, try to do your own little research about the competition in the market. You can search through search engines such as Google, MSN and Yahoo! for similar sites and take note of them for future reference. If you are the only one writing about the topic, do not rejoice just yet. In this field, being the only one in the market may not mean you can dominate the niche; it may mean that there is no one particularly interested in it. The decision is still up to you.

5. Of course, you would need articles that will do well in search engine listings. Majority of online users utilize these search engines. To maximize your potential for traffic and conversion, you would need to optimize your articles through the right keywords. You can use keyword tools that are available on the Internet to know how many searches are being generated on the keywords you choose.

You should not look for keywords that are popular, but not too common that there are thousands of them amass on the net. It is always best to keep your keywords as unique as possible. Make a list of all potential keywords that you would like, run preliminary searches then see how many articles have been written on those keywords. If there are much too many, you might need to change them a bit.

In writing articles for the web, your main concern would be in gaining as much visibility as you can. These efforts can only reap rewards if you begin with a very careful and informed selection of possible topics to write about. Use the guidelines mentioned above, write about those topics, and watch as your articles reap the rewards that you have always dreamed of.
