It seems that everyone is feeling the current economic crunch. Cities and communities that have built their budgets around the tourism industry are feeling the trouble more than most. The last year, 2008, revealed a shortage of travel spending across the United States and experts are predicting that the New Year will not be any better for the industry.

Travel through out the United States is not the only problem that the tourism industry has been facing. Travel into the United States from others countries is also wreaking havoc on the income from the tourism industry. As the economic trouble continues to tighten around the globe these numbers are likely to fall even more than in 2008.

Tourism was a strong industry for many years and many communities built their livelihood and budgets around the dollars from visitors. The abrupt change in how consumers are spending their money is causing these communities to struggle to make ends meet. Even states that are well known for their tourism are beginning to feel the pain of the tightening economy.

There is hope on the horizon. A strong U.S. dollar hurts foreign travel but many experts are predicting that the value of the dollar is set to begin falling. A softer dollar could mean that more foreign travel into the United States is on the horizon and it should serve to boost the struggling tourism industry across the country.

Another hope for the tourism industry is local travel. Communities and companies are repackaging their advertisements to draw local visitors instead putting all the emphasis on outside consumers. The goal is to get the local residents to enjoy the attractions and events in their own backyards ? giving them a vacation at a budget price. At the same time, the tourism industry in the region receives a much needed boost.
