[U23]Under Counter Water Purifier
by Thomas Manso, Tho
When it comes the time to decide on a water purification system for your home, it would be alright to choose any water purifier rather than not choosing any at all. Of course, there are some differences among water purifiers. Some water purifiers are more efficient or work better than others. Sometimes the difference in price does not translate into a difference in quality. We have included here some important information that can help you when shopping around for the appropriate water system for your home.
When choosing a water purification system, health and safety should be essential elements to be taken into consideration. Public treatment installations try to protect our health first of all through disinfection.
If you do not have a water treatment facility in your area, then you should seriously consider the source of your water before you decide on a water purifier. There are usually a number of pollutants in water that need to be dealt with and consequently there are various steps that need to be taken to accomplish that purpose. Public treatment facilities use various steps to disinfect the water and you may end up using more than one water purifier depending on the source of your water.
For instance, in the rare occasion that your water is obtained from a river or lake you need a thorough lake or river-water purification. In that case, the total process may include the following water purification systems: reverse osmosis, selective filtration and distillation. This is so because each water purification system focuses on specific contaminants and fails to eliminate others. Just look at the following analysis:
The water purifier that uses reverse osmosis to purify the water removes inorganic contaminants that have a molecule that is larger than the molecule of water. Reverse osmosis water purifiers do not remove herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, THMs or bacterial contaminants. You are more likely not to use this purifier since your water source might not be a lake or river, and consequently you can skip this step in the process. This step is completed at the public’s water purification program if your water comes from that source.
The water purifier that uses distillation does so in order to kill bacteria, but if you boil the water you can get the same effective results. If your water comes from a treatment facility, disinfection has already been done, and E coli and other bacteria are not present, except in the case of a massive storm or similar event. Although, bacteria in the spore step of evolvement would be present.
Water purification systems that are finicky use a selective filtration or a variety of filtering media to get rid of the different contaminants. You need to check about the quality, performance and steps used by the water purifier before you buy it, since these elements will affect the outcome regarding the removal of contaminants.

We can take a look at one of the best water purifiers on the market with a multi-stage system. In the first step, activated carbon granules remove chlorine, chemicals and disinfection byproducts. After that, a multi-media block catches gaseous contaminants, like THMs. The public water purification uses methods that cannot remove the bacterial cysts that the sub-micron sized pores of the block remove. Ultimately, the water is purified by passing it through and ion exchange stage.
The ion exchange step removes lead and other metallic contaminants by exchanging the ions of the contaminants for potassium and sodium. Through the addition of this last step, the final outcome is an improved taste and healthfulness due an improved mineral content and balancing of the pH level.
Most homes only require the use of a selective filtration water purifier, but in cases of floods or even heavy rains E-coli bacteria may be present. But usually, the public water purification facility will inform the public in that situation. If that is the case, you would want to filter the water first and then boil it. Make sure you drink healthy water.

Here is a few of the different types of water purifiers on the market:

1. Ozonated purifiers
2. Water distillers
3. Reverse osmosis
4. Filtered
5. UV lamps for killing bacteria
6. Water ionizers

This is most of them, there may be others but one of these types will probably be the kind you purchase. Now I should let you know that you would probably get one with a mix of these features. For example I saw a a model that had filtration, a UV lamp and produced ozone. For those of you that do not know, ozone is just oxygen or (O2) with another oxygen molecule fastened to it (O3) that searches out and annihilates a toxin or parasite and then turns back into O2. Ozone will oxygenate the water and make it taste good.

Next are distillers. These are good in a way that you are guaranteed clean and safe drinking water. This may be ok for detoxifying your body but this water is looked upon to be dead and has no minerals in it. It is very hard to get a solid conclusion on this, as there are many different opinions. My feeling is that there may be greater choices.

Reverse Osmosis systems are quite popular as these machines have a process where water is forced through a semi-permeable membrane, this eliminates pollutants and leaves the water tasting good.

Now filtered and UV water purifiers are kinds that I think should not be used alone. They are ok but each one only tackles one problem. The filter may get rid of pollutants and some chemicals but not bacteria and the UV systems are great at eliminating bacteria but not chemicals.

The last water purifier of the group is water ionizers. The best concept about this type of apparatus is Oxidation Reduction Potential or ORP for short. This is the units ability to calculate the formation of anti oxidant properties in the water. You want a low negative number here. Around negative 200 ORP is a great number. Another wonderful aspect is that the machine can develop alkaline water, which is very good for health.

If I had to decide from the group I would either pick an ozonated purifier or a water ionizer.
