[U64]University Of Alternative Medicine
by Laurie J. Raphael, Lau

If you have ever looked into alternative medicine in the past, you are probably well aware that it is becoming quite popular. Although alternative medicine is probably never going to overtake standard medicine, the number of people using this method is on the rise. As you can imagine, more and more people are looking into alternative medicine for a reason. For people who have tried standard medicine, with no success, alternative medicine is the next thing in line for them to try.

So what is alternative medicine? Generally speaking, this is anything that is not a standard medical practice. For instance, oncologists have a standard procedure that they follow when treating cancer patients. Of course, they may deviate from this a bit, but all in all they have a standard protocol that they follow through with. If you are not interested in trying these standard practices, alternative medicine is the next best thing for you. Believe it or not, there are many people who will only look into alternative medicine when they get sick; even if they have a very dangerous health problem. The fact of the matter is that they think alternative medicine gives them a much better chance of getting well; and they may be right.

You can see just how popular alternative medicine has become by simply going online, or checking out the books at a local store. There are new alternative health websites popping up each day, and several books have been published on this as of late. This alone shows you just how popular this trend has become.

All in all, if you are interested in alternative medicine you should be able to find the information that you need. The popularity of alternative health is on the rise, and there is no reason for you to not join in on this.

Eastern medical practices have started to become more accepted and used in the West. The once far fetched idea of using meditation, herbs and other alternative health approaches no longer is laughed at.

When it comes to sweeping terms, alternative medicine is certainly one. It can include everything from massage, herb treatments, meditation and even prayer. This grab bag approach has led to an argument over what exactly alternative medicine means.

On one side of the dispute, you have medical professionals who believe anything that is not from the European medical model and evidence based is alternative medicine. For example, herbalism would fall under alternative medicine in their opinion.

On the other side of the ledger are medical professionals who mock the alternative title. They suggest a medical approach must be evidence driven. It either works or it does not. If it works, than it is part of mainstream medicine regardless of where it came from.

Given the disputed approach, which one wins out? The answer has yet to be determined and is somewhat semantic when you think about it. For regular folk, however, alternative medicine is a viable health care treatment.

In the United States, adults are turning towards alternative medicine. More than 50 percent have used some form of it, a number that makes one wonder if it can be called alternative any longer.

This percentage might seem be interpreted as a rejection of Western approaches. It is not. Most people use alternative treatment approaches in combination with western. In short, they try for the best of both worlds.

The use of alternative medicinal supplements is focused. Most uses are tailored towards conditions that involve reoccurring pain issues. These can be joint or trauma related.

People prefer to self-medicate with alternative medicinal approaches. Less than twenty percent will consult with a licensed practitioner.

Looking at the issue a different way, we find a distinct division between the sexes. Men are far less likely to turn to alternative medical approaches than are women. There is no clear basis as to why.

At the end of the day, the exact nature of alternative medicine is somewhat irrelevant. What is clear is people are becoming more receptive to its use as a mainstream solution. One must wonder if it can really be called alternative any more.
