[U78]Unlimited Online File Storage
by Fabian Toulouse, Fab
In the business world, the need for reliable, accessible backup of corporate data is a constant one. In the past -- and even today -- many companies opt for magnetic tape backup systems to protect their data. Others employ a RAID-based system, which stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks, which is an umbrella term for backing up your data across multiple hard disks. Tape backups, while popular, are prone to a number of problems including tape wear-and-tear, limited intermediate backups, and a lack of data integrity. The RAID method offers an attractive solution; however, most businesses like to keep a copy of their vital data offsite.

Within the past few years, we have seen the growth of offsite, automatic or semi-automatic backup services that offer consumers an alternative to in-house backups. Traditionally, online file storage suffered from a lack of bandwidth and prohibitive storage costs. With the development and dissemination of broadband technology, online data storage costs decreased considerably. The options available to both businesses and collective private citizens are not only affordable, but extremely accommodating.

Though online file storage is usually geared towards the business community, many personal computer users are also opting for backing up their data online. Backing up or filing data online provides an extremely cost effective alternative to buying a file server. Many online companies now offer support for large files, unlimited storage space, search engine capabilities to find stored files, and a fully configurable file server located offsite.

Many business are concerned about privacy, but with today's powerful data encryption protocols in place, this is not a significant problem. Most file servers and online file storage systems take extra steps to protect both data and privacy. The online interfaces allow for collaborative efforts, where more than one person can log into the file server and backup files, and also protect against unplanned events or natural disasters (hurricanes, tornadoes and the like).

Most online file storage facilities offer non-intrusive backup services that are more effective than traditional scheduled backups. Furthermore, they are easy to access by sanctioned users and extremely difficult to infiltrate by non-sanctioned users. Where necessary, collaborative projects and remote access are accounted for, giving businesses and private users a great deal of flexibility. There is also automatic file versioning for collaborative efforts that is usually offered as well as the ability to be notified of changes made to particular documents with identification easily made as well.

Why would someone want online file hosting? It will allow you to do a lot of things with your files. You can store many different types of files online. It is a way to host files online and let certain people of your choosing to download them for their own use. You can have them do this via the internet or by file transfer protocol (FTP). There are many different uses for online file storage.
If you look online you will find a lot of companies that offer online file storage. You will have to pay a specified amount in order to load your files onto their site. It is a good way for developers to share their programs with other interested users on the internet. Anyone who would like to try the program can download it and try it out. Some even allow users to modify the program in order to help in its development and work out any bugs it may have.
Anyone can use online file storage as a place to keep files they want to hide from other people that might be using their computer. You may have bank information on your computer that someone may see or even hack into your pc and access. Someone could also accidentally delete important files or corrupt a file that is important to you. If a virus attacks your computer all your files may be destroyed or infected, even those on an extra storage device if it is connected to your pc. You computer is not the most secure place to store your files. With online storage however you can back up your files with confidence and no one can access them unless you allow it.
Your files will be safer if you store them online, that way when your computer goes down they will be there waiting. You can access them if you need to and when you get your pc straightened out or get a new one you can just go to the site and get all your files back with ease. This is better than using compact disks for instance as they only have a limited shelf life and you may find they will not read when the time comes to retrieve your files. You will probably be charged according to the space your files will occupy on their server. The more files you have and the bigger they are, the more it will cost you to store them. You may also be charged for bandwidth you use which will depend on how many times you files are downloaded.
The company has to pay fees for the bandwidth and storage their site uses so they are merely passing these charges on to you to cover what you use. You may be able to upload and download using just the site itself or you may have to get additional tools such as FTP to do this. A simple easy to use FTP program can be downloaded from the internet if you have to use one. The online storage site will help you if you have any problems. There are many good reasons for using online file storage. If you have anything at all you don't want to risk losing, you should find an online storage company to fit your needs.
