[T1342]Triple Track Storm Window
by Guy Morris, Guy
The garage door is normally the biggest opening on houses, especially if you have a double garage. The size of the door makes it very vulnerable to damage from storms, in particular hurricanes. Many people remember that they have to invest considerable resources to protect their windows, however few people stop and think about their garage door.

The high pressure wind experienced during a hurricane can quite easily blow a garage door in, allowing more wind and rain into the house. The extra wind and rain can cause further damage to your house, belongings and even endanger people's lives. Many people overlook the humble garage door when preparing their property to stand up to high speed winds and other extreme weather conditions. Even fewer people consider the importance of protecting the .

During recent years there has been a lot of publicity showing just what damage a storm can do in a few minutes. People living in communities which are often struck by storms have learnt that they need to be prepared for the worst, so that they can protect their homes. It is important to use either passive of active reinforcement garage door systems.

Active systems are designed in such a way that they must be fitted just before the storm hits, this means that you will have to spend some time preparing your house for a storm. Passive systems are designed in a different way, the protection is built into the door itself and so do not require any activation before the storm, in other words these products are always prepared for a storm.

There are two major options that a homeowner living in an area with lots of hurricanes can consider, they can either fit a brand new passive protected garage door, or they could purchase and install garage door reinforcement kits to secure their existing garage door.

Replacing a garage door with a new one is very expensive, so most people will choose to invest in one of the reinforcement kits instead. If you have more money available then you may want to consider installing a brand new garage door as it offers a much higher level of security and safety from high speed winds and other storms, not to mention it being more convenient.

If you are on a budget then you might be interested in the cheaper option of the two, and that is to purchase a garage door reinforcement kit. These reinforce your existing garage door in a number of ways. Shutters are the first line of defense, these will prevent any damage caused by impact of objects and the high speed wind itself. If you have a garage door which is designed to resist impact then you may not need any shutters. However, if you have an impact resistant door which does not have a wind rating then you should consider installing a bracing system for your garage door to make it more secure against wind.

When you are installing a bracing system for your garage door you first need to make sure you are purchasing a product which has had sufficient testing to ensure that it will be able to stand up to the high speed winds. It is important that these can cope with wind pressure which is both negative and positive.

Learning to adapt and protect yourself is the way of life for people in these areas. Blocking windows and doors with plywood as a protective sheet in order to keep all of the above mentioned from harming them or their families is what these people have learned to do.

It's no doubt that lumber yards and their suppliers love this season since they do great business in these times. If you're a procrastinator you'll see that waiting is going to cost you since prices may jump to incredible amounts at this dire time. It's not an easy life, boarding up windows as quickly as possible, making your house look terrible, and then having to rip it all down shortly after in order to lead a normal life.

However, there is a much better way, and many people have now figured this out. They've learned that hurricane shutters and storm windows are a more viable option, plus decrease a huge amount of labor along the way. These stay on throughout the year, being a decorative fixture to fit your homes theme. Closing these shutters or windows is a lot easier than the alternative mentioned above.

Here are some of your hurricane window protection options.

Exterior hurricane shutters can be conformed to fit your homes decorations and theme, while providing ample protection from bolting debris, and the high winds that bolt them. This is also a good security option for keeping intruders at bay. If you're handy you could even construct these yourself with some wood.

Rolling shutters are also a good protective option. These are usually make from aluminum, or better yet a heavy low maintenance vinyl. They can be used to control the light admitted into your home on nice days, and closed to block wind and debris on stormy ones.

If you're handy you could easily construct rolling shutters yourself as well.

And last but not least are actual storm windows, also known these days as hurricane windows. A storm window is made with double paned glass that has a protection strip between the panes. This strip will stay in place during the event that the glass shatters leaving you with a continued protection from debris and wind.

No storm is fun, but they're a fact of life for a lot of people. For this reason being prepared is your best bet of weathering any storm safely and securely.
