Diabetes is a very common disease which is widespread all over the world, can cause serious complications if not controlled in the initial stages. Nearly seven percent of the people in United States are suffering from Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes is caused due to lack of Insulin in the body. There are Islet cells in the pancreas in the body which produce the hormone, Insulin. If the cells in the body do not react to the Insulin then Insulin can not be utilized by the cells, hence causing Type 2 diabetes.
Oftentimes, insulin injection or other prescribed drugs are brought in use to control the blood sugar level and hence diabetes. But, to the maximum, diet and exercise play a vital role in lowering down the fat, the sugar level and controlling diabetes. Proper and balanced diet and regular exercise are also responsible to bring down the effects of diabetes.
Weight-loss surgery has emerged as a very effective remedy for Diabetes. As compared to other modes of treatment of Diabetes, weight-loss surgery has better results on Type 2 Diabetes patients. Gastric-bypass and lap-band surgery are the two kinds of weight-loss surgery. It has been found that diabetes patients react fast to weight-loss surgery as compared to other modes of treatment. At first, Lap-band surgery was considered less beneficial than gastric-bypass surgery as it was found that that lap-band surgery made some hormonal changes in the body.
But gradually, within short span of time, the lap-band surgery also emerged as a successful mode of treatment of diabetes like the gastric-bypass surgery. The difference between the two modes of treatment is that in the lap-band surgery, the upper area of the patient's stomach is tied with a band of silicone while in the gastric-bypass surgery, the upper and lower parts of the stomach are equally divided, thereby making the stomach smaller. Gastric bypass surgery helps to reduce weight by absorbing lesser calories of food as the food is allowed to bypass the small intestine in this treatment.
Almost 84 percent of the Type 2 diabetes patients in United States are given the gastric-bypass surgery treatment. The ratio of the death-rate of the patients undergoing Gastric-bypass surgery is 1 in 200 while the ratio of the death-rate of the patients undergoing Gastric-bypass surgery is 1 in 2000. Lap-band surgery has less side-effects in comparison to the Gastric-bypass surgery and is more safer than the Gastric-bypass surgery as the gall bladder is completely removed from the body in case of gastric-band surgery.
Insulin and Oral medications are the preferred choice of treatment for diabetes patients. If dieting and exercising do not give the desired results, than Insulin shots and medications are the second step of treatment. The requirement for Insulin shots, oral medications, exercising and dieting is eradicated if patient is given lap-band surgery. People with type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and fat, especially obese people with mass index above 40 react fast to lap-band surgery as compared to other modes of treatment. If excess weight of the body is minimized, than diabetes treatment gives better results. Nearly 76% of diabetics benefit from the above mentioned modes of treatment.
Scientists are finding the reason for obesity being the major cause of diabetes, and the reason for weight loss being the major treatment in controlling diabetes. Insulin's reaction in the body is stimulated by excess fat and cholesterol in the body. Tests are also being done to identify the the role of fatty acids in the blood and the hormones produced by fat in the body that regulate Insulin.
