[T1325]Treatments For Acne Scarring
by Elisa Cruz, Eli
Having visible marks of any kind on the face is enough to feel uncomfortable and self conscious. It is important to be aware though of the many advanced skin care treatments that are available to those who are seeking out the removal of scars. Treatment is available. Many dermatologists are devoted to caring for skin and have found ways to effectively treat a multitude of symptoms and skin disorders.

One common skin condition is acne scaring. Even after the wounds have gone away, the skin can still show the tell-tale signs of having been inflamed and damaged by infection. Even years after the acne is gone it is possible to still see acne scars which can make the skin appear less than flawless and attribute to self-image challenges. There are currently many options that treat acne snaring effectively; which one is best for your skin and situation is up to you to decide. Since some skin types are more prone to acne scars and scaring in general, it is important to be aware of what skin treatments are best for your skin type.

Darker marks on the superficial layer of skin on the face are not considered acne scars and actually fade with time. Their removal can be facilitated with certain creams and gels meant to promote cell turnover. Rather, acne scaring involves damage to the collagen in the deeper layers of the skin. Scars appear as ?pits? in the skin, or indentations. To remove these, the skin must usually be leveled, or sanded down in some respect. This can be done in a number of different ways. Dermabrasion is one option for the removal of acne scars which takes layers off of the skin and then requires a period of healing time to allow the skin to re-establish itself. It is a common procedure but is more invasive since it requires the removal of the epidermis and part of the dermis. There can be complications and this treatment is not recommended for darker skin tones since there is a higher likelihood of hyper pigmentation.

Another effective way to help with acne scarring is laser resurfacing which is similar to dermabrasion but uses a laser rather than a resurfacing tool that sands down the skin. Other treatments are subcision and excision which ultimately pick out scars or remove scars. The skin is then sewed back together and heals with a line scar which can be blended into surrounding skin. Chemical peels can help to remove skin as well and are shown to be pretty effective. There are risks associated with infection as the acids used in the peels can work to slough deep layers of skin.

Regardless of which choice works best for your skin, it is vital that you seek out the help of a skin care doctor or dermatologist who can assist with the removal of your acne scaring. Certain skin types respond better to certain treatments. It is always a great idea to ask plenty of questions and to get a firm understanding of the procedure from start to finish.

Acne pimples do not affect everyone the same way or with the same level of severity. While it is true that majority of the people will or have experienced acne pimples at one point or another in their lives, their experience with acne will certainly differ to a great extent. For some pimples will be noting more than minor annoyance during prom or first date, for others it will become a life long battle. This is the reason why there are many different types of acne pimple treatments on the market including prescription and non-prescription.

The first thing to understand about acne is that not all acne is the same. In fact acne is graded on a scale of one to eight, with one being very minor and eight being quite severe. Minor acne such as small pimples known as Whiteheads or blackheads can be treated with various types of scrubs or skin exfoliants available of the counter at your local supermarket or drugstore whereas large acne lesions known as cysts will require specialized treatment, surgery or extra strong acne medicine to bring it under control.

Over the counter acne treatments available at your local drug store, super market or online for that matter are generally comprised of either one of two main ingredients including Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic Acid. Neither seems to have an huge advantage over the other, however treatments containing salicylic acid tend to be preferred by people with sensitive skin over BP based treatments. Salicylic Acid appears to be far gentler on sensitive skin than its counterpart. Regardless of the treatment type, the ultimate goal of any acne treatment is to accelerate the skin exfoliating process so that the pore can be cleared quickly and acne can be prevented or minimized.

While minor to moderate amount of acne can be treated or controlled with over the counter treatments, it is not the case with extreme cases of acne lesions. Large lumps or cysts emerging from deep within the skin can only be treated with professional medical help. This is where acne medicine such as Accutane come to the rescue. While Accutane is know to have many dangerous side-effects it is one of the best known medications for treating severe cases of acne.

Minor to moderate acne can be treated with store bought treatments, but when it comes to treating severe acne, it is your best bet to consult with your doctor and have her determine the best course of action for you.
