Thanks to her tireless efforts, the Sunday after Labor Day was given unanimous Congressional approval and signed into existence as National Grandparents Day by President Jimmy Carter. The holiday was celebrated across the United States for the first time in 1979.

The day's main goals are stated as "honor[ing] grandparents, give[ing] grandparents the opportunity to show love for their children's children, and help[ing] children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer."

Visiting with grandparents or other older relatives, especially nursing home patients, or bringing your children to visit theirs are wonderful ways for the young and old to socialize and form bonds. In addition to that, Mrs. McQuade has suggested doing anything from cooking, knitting or quilting, to dances and sing-alongs.

Family dinners or reunions to specifically commemorate the elder generations are also great activities to celebrate the occasion, not to mention the compilation of a family tree or poring over dusty photograph albums full of snapshots of someone in the bathtub surrounded by a fleet of rubber duckies.
