[B641]Beyond Fact Or Fiction
by Cecilia Valenzuela, Cec
One thing cannot be argued about though, is the fact that there are thousands of Arizonans who have claimed to have seen an Arizona UFO. Thousands of others from around the world have also claimed to have same or similar experiences with UFO's and have the videos to prove it.

Many people will remember the event that took place back in July of 1947 wherein a sighting occurred. It happened during a severe thunderstorm near Roswell, New Mexico, during an Air Force experiment using high altitude balloons. The balloons blew apart and later fell to the earth which prompted many to believe that this was something that was the result of alien activity.

Talk about mass confusion! The entire world seemed to have been sitting on the edge of their seats when they heard the news that the Air Force had a flying saucer in their possession.

Shortly thereafter, the news channels announced that the Air Force did not have a UFO in their possession, but rather had nothing more than weather balloons.

People were skeptical though as many still believed that there was more to the story than what they were being told. Many felt that they had been lied to by government officials and that that the event was a cover up.

Many believers of unidentified flying object enthusiasts firmly believe that on that day in 1947, an alien spaceship really had crashed on earth.

Many people in Arizona were fortunate enough to see the famous Phoenix Lights. If you have never read the story about the Phoenix Lights before, it really is something that makes you wonder if UFO's really do exist.

Even if you are the most skeptical person when it comes to an Arizona UFO, or anywhere else for that matter, you might just have a different opinion once you read about this major event that took place on March 13th, 1997 when thousands of people witnessed what was believed to be a UFO sighting in Arizona.

There are real UFO sighting clips that makes even the most skeptical person a believer. There are countless stories of people that are so sure that they have seen a UFO.

There are others who think that these people have to be either crazy or are simply making the story up to just to get a little attention.

True or just someone who has a very wild imagination? Some of these believers were the most skeptical when it comes to UFO's. That is before they, too, had a real life experience.

Many people are no longer cynical following their experience that convinced them otherwise. Some individuals prefer to keep their sighting experience a secret, for fear of being laughed at. Some fear even more severe reactions by family and friends that they feel that it would be best if they just kept the experience with an unidentified flying object to themselves.

Whether you are a believer of UFO's or not, there still remains a lot of unanswered questions which may make the non-believer question it themselves.

Many people who have experienced a UFO sighting have been frightened so badly that they have told very few people. Some witnesses are so troubled by their experience that they have literally had to seek professional counseling for their real life experiences.

The association between aliens and unidentified flying objects seem to go hand in hand. Reports are everywhere about these sightings as many claim to have been abducted by aliens in addition to seeing a flying object. Crazy as it may seem, these are real life stories that many people believe.

UFO sightings have taken place throughout the entire state of Arizona in such cities as Tempe, Mesa, Gold Canyon, Superior, Tucson, Flagstaff, Phoenix, and Scottsdale. Many other cities in Arizona have all had similar stories along with other parts of the world.

Again, these sightings are not just specific to Arizona. Virtually every state and several other countries share these similar experiences.

I know of another story where a man who was on his patio in California, who noticed a very brilliant bright white light while he was sweeping. The light was headed towards him and he is sure that this had to be a UFO.

Whether you believe in these sightings or not, there seems to be enough ongoing debate to keep the notion alive.

The minute you mention that you're a writer you nearly always get the same reaction. It goes something like this: 'Do you write crime thrillers/science fiction/romance/spy stories etc .etc. etc.' I was pleasantly surprised recently when someone I met at a writer's circle said 'I don't write fiction.' We had a very interesting conversation, the essence of which was this -

The fiction market is absolutely crammed with writers: established A-listers, journeyman B-listers and aspiring hopefuls or those with maybe just one or two minor pieces published. In other words - it's a buyer's market. That's why this person writes factual books. Fiction publishers have their pick of the crop and can afford to be as choosy as they wish.

In a way you can't blame them: the cost of promoting an unknown author can be very high indeed and publishers are a notoriously hard-headed bunch. After all, an editor of any publishing house is responsible to the owners for turning a profit. It's a business, pure and simple.

Factual books are a different matter. I would not suggest for one moment that publishers of factual books - and they range from cookbooks to erudite tomes on some very rarified subjects - are any less business-oriented. It's just that writers of such books are noticeably thinner on the ground than fiction writers, making the chances of publishing success that much more favourable.

Indeed, many fiction writers also write factual books. George MacDonald Fraser, the author of the hugely successful 'Flashman' series of fiction books, also wrote several factual (and entertaining) books such as 'The Steel Bonnets' and 'Quartered Safe Out Here'. His 'McAuslan' series are a thinly-disguised autobiographical account of his time in the army and bridge the gap between fact and fiction.

What does this suggest? Perhaps that even such a successful fiction writer as Fraser discovered the market for factual books?

Whatever the reason for Fraser's decision, the fact remains that books written about factual subjects sell. So how can you break into the market? First requirement: know your subject. This may seem obvious but you simply cannot write a factual book by picking up bits of knowledge from the internet and hoping to appear to be an expert. However, if you have been, let's say, a financial analyst, or a pro football player, or maybe just a lifelong gardener, you may well be qualified to write a book.

Second requirement: know how to write. This is where a lot of would-be writers blow out their cheeks and adopt a rueful expression: ah, if only I could write . . .

If you simply cannot write, consider a ghostwriter. These are people who will turn your knowledge and expertise into a manuscript that will meet the requirements of publishers, yet put your name on the dustjacket. It may not be your ideal way of seeing you name in print but it's an avenue to consider.

If, however, you possess the ability and the knowledge of your subject, why not try writing a factual book? Writing courses and classes are readily available and you might find you possess more ability than you thought! The market is there for you - go out and get a piece of it!
